This is a critical program for me and my family. Having grown up as son of immigrants (from Peru) of modest means - where Spanish was my first language - G&T type programs were critical for me. Please engage with parents to keep these programs healthy, expanding, and growing.

We demand:
1. The Mayor and DOE fulfill their promises and start family engagement without delay.
2. In good faith, leave flexibility in their plans for Citywide and District G&T programs to incorporate family input into the future of these programs that are intended to meet the educational needs of accelerated NYC student learners.
3. Chancellor Porter and other DOE officials meet with any and all CECs that request an Open Public Meeting to provide a forum for input from the G&T community in those districts prior to any announced changes to G&T programs.

Change "G&T" to "AL" for accelerated learners. Accelerated learning addresses a specific "special need," essential for some learners. Get rid of "gifted and talented " name, as all children are, each in their own ways. It's embarrassing to say gifted and talented to another parent, as it often implies to them that their kid isn't gifted and talented.
I know from experience that integrating accelerated learners does not work. It does not adequately address the needs of these special needs students.
