Appropriate level education for children allows them to flourish. Accelerated and rigorous G&T curriculum in a classroom allows students capable of doing this level of work to flourish. We need legislation to protect this right just as IEP students have federal and state protections for their rights.
We were promised real parent/community engagement on these issues but have not heard anything yet from a system that costs taxpayers $38 billion. We expect better.

It is against the very tenets of diversity and inclusion to EXCLUDE existing G&T families from this discussion. Without bringing all affected and interested parties to the table, any solution put forward will be flawed. Please allow for open conversation about our children’s future!

Don’t dumb down the system! Offer easily accessible resources for G&T programs & SHSAT prep for all families throughout the city. Support our children by enriching them scholastically rather than lowering the bar.

Please support all kids in their education, at all levels, including those with advanced levels of ability as well as those kids who need more help. In order to set the system up to teach kids at their level of need, please involved parents at the planning stage.

I am the mom of a highly gifted child (neuropsychologist evaluation). He learns differently. It's not about whether a child is bright and can take a test. It's so much deeper than that. Truly gifted brains are wired differently. In my opinion, there should be options outside of lotteries and non IQ "achievement tests" where way too many children are perceived as gifted. In reality 2-3% of the world population are truly gifted. How can there be so many that qualify as gifted. It's just not possible. I'm not saying those kids are not bright and deserving, but there is difference between high achievers and being gifted. Plus the whole lottery system is so flawed and we all know it. In the case of my son, we are blessed to be in an amazing UES public school. Shout out to PS183! They recognize my sons exceptional abilities and his asynchronicity (hallmark of giftedness). He's in 3rd grade now and despite the flawed g and T system we found a way to give him everything he needs. He has an IEP and is on his own plan. I suppose my point is that I do believe g and t programs are important but maybe base it on true intelligence and gifts and not a test score and a lottery. (or at least allow outside testing such as Wisspi or Wisc). Those are true IQ tests that are beneficial to the whole child. Please find a way to possibly have a g and t classroom in every grade, in every school.
Thank you for listening.
