The city needs to understand that G&T is not a frivolous luxury. It is a necessity for certain types of learners. ALL students should be tested for these programs (unless they choose to opt out), and everyone who is eligible should be offered a seat.

As the former PTA President of TAG Young Scholars, a citywide G&T school, I can confirm there has been no engagement with the parent community by the mayor.

Academically gifted and talented students in this country make up approximately six to ten percent of the total student population (three to five million students). These students differ from typical students in terms of learning style, depth and complexity of understanding, and potential. This difference from the norm for their age group means that the education program for gifted students should be modified to meet their needs. However, most gifted students receive the majority of their K-12 education in a regular classroom, taught by teachers who have not been trained to teach high-ability students. For many gifted students, much of the time they spend in school is wasted; they have already mastered the material and are marking time until they are allowed to skip a grade or are permitted to take college-level courses.
We need to keep G & T to meet the needs of these learners! We need more G&T programs, taught by teachers specifically trained in how to best reach these kids!

Critical race theory has no place in the school system. Teaching academics such as arithmetic, reading, science, and history everything else is a parents responsibility not the school district.

Removing G&T for gifted kids is like removing special education for kids with special needs. Would you do that? How gifted kids are different from kids with special needs? Gifted kids have an abnormal brain structure and have their special needs too! If these needs are not nurtured then these kids are treated unfairly. We need to advocate for these kids and their special needs. Keep G&T!

This gifted and talented program is essential for the success of the country. If this program is discontinued, our education system will just turn out average performer and it would be very difficult to compete in the global stage. We’ll really fall behind.

My 3 kids have greatly benefitted from the G&T program in NYC. The mayor and the DOE continue to destroy any program that works in an otherwise massively failing system.
