(Update Jan. 17, 12 pm) Some parents are calling Councillor Josh Matlow's office with their concerns. Our hope is to get some action by the end of the day. Call to 416-392-7906.

Having been through a similar situation myself, the quality of air is so poor and difficult to breath. My son has asthma and has a difficult time breathing the last few days and has now developed a horrible cough as a result.

(Update Jan. 17) Some parents are calling Toronto Public Health at 416-338-7600 for faster action than this petition. Please consider calling them.

My son has been complaining the last few days of headaches. I myself dropped my kids off at school the morning of November 11th and the fumes by the soccer field were so overpowering that the teacher who was supervising was covering her face with a scarf. I myself had to also do the same for the smell was so strong it made me gag. This can't be safe for the children who are inhaling these fumes on a continuous basis for the last few weeks.

(Update Jan. 17) The secretary at the school said that many parents are calling in but as yet the Principal (away sick) and the Vice Principal have not yet communicated anything about the issue.

This work should have been scheduled in the summer, after school hours or the weekend

Aside from the obvious hazards here, the people who are supposed to be in charge, seem to be asleep at the switch. Neither the principal or VP were at the school this morning and I understand the principal is off this week. I guess he doesn't want to inhale what he's okay with my daughter and the others have to take in. I'm so mad about this I could scream. Talk is so ####ing cheap. People go on and on about the importance of the health and safety of our children but who follows through? Does anyone in charge there care about the kids? Finally, someone at TDSB really needs to look into how this school is being run. Or not.

This is ridiculous. Through all of last year my daughter was in a classroom that leaked so badly the floor tiles lifted off the floor, her desk was constantly wet and the smell was awful. They were shifted between the classroom, library and lunch room, it was very disruptive and it took ages to get the attention of anyone that this was a serious problem. We assumed that it would be fixed before this year and instead the kids are suffering through this instead. My daughter has had sore eyes and a sore throat and I took her out of school today. I think the least the administration could do is to keep us informed as to what is going on. It's a safety issue and should be treated as such.

The air safety level made us really concerned about the kids and the staff at school. Please provide update and action immediately to change the current situation.

I'm a parent at Deer Park school and it is UNACCEPTABLE that our kids and teacher are exposed to the toxic fumes produced for fixing the roof. The job should have been done during the summer or on the weekends.

I am a very concerned grand parent of two children at Deer Park school. I have always presumed that the children's health and welfare would be placed ahead of the convenience of repairs to a building.

I am deeply concerned of the safety and health of the school children, and staff at Deer Park PS. The Parents require to be updated of this situation and its progress to be communicated on an ongoing basis.

The odors in the school and chemical fumes are unacceptable ways to treat our children and staff at our schools.

Such work could be done in the summer when there is little or no children within the school vicinity. TDSB has got to seriously think about the impact on students having to learn in a hazardous environment.

I'm very concerned for all the children and staff at Deer Park P.S. Not only have there been immediate reactions, but what of long-term effects?

We are very concerned over the air quality of the school. This needs to be addressed immediately.

Please postpone this work until the sunmertime. The fact that there is only one contracting company to do the work does not justify the health risks our kids and teachers are being exposed to.

Why wasn't this done over the summer when the building was empty?

This is completely unacceptable! This work should be done outside school/ daycare hours. I cannot believe that this is happening in this day and age where the health risks of being exposed to these chemicals is well known!! The only solution we have been offered is to keep our children at home which is not an option for work families who have no other resource for taking care of our kids!
