We, the undersigned, petition the Decorah City Council and Winneshiek County Board to create a public municipal utility to provide broadband high-speed fiber optic internet connections to area businesses and residents.

The recent FCC ruling regarding these publicly owned fiber optic broadband utilities allows communities across the country to create their own networks for their residents and businesses.

The Metronet provides a backbone for such a venture. While city and county governments and other area institutionshave enjoyed the benefits of this existing fiber optic infrastructure, the taxpayers within the community have not had direct access to this connection.

The proposed services would directly and indirectly create or attract jobs, new businesses and young families. These benefits would be created at an affordable rate that is locally controlled.

Such a venture would promote telecommuting and strengthen area businesses. This venture would also increase bandwidth and download speeds for residential users.

The City of Decorah and Winneshiek County would also have the capability to install wireless hotspots in the area to enhance tourism. The public municipal utility would keep Decorah competitive with surrounding communities as they complete fiber optic networks.

High speed broadband isa necessity and not a luxury for any progressive community.

I have been hearing from so many of you who are tired of struggling with slow connections while trying to work from home. Behind the scenes I am preparing presentations for the next council session because the reality of our current infrastructure is holding our entire community back.

Seeing this kind of movement in our community is overwhelming. It is clear that we are all tired of waiting for the access we deserve to keep our town competitive.

I've been dreaming of a city-wide ISP for a long time and I was considering proposing it to the city. I'm definitely all for this!

Needed not just within the City of Decorah. We need this to develop a variety of economic opportunities in rural Winn. County.

The efficiency of my telework support to my east coast Federal Government client would be considerably enhanced with access to this capability.

This is something a forward looking community expects to be made available to its citizens.

High speed, reliable internet is a necessity for the community my family chooses to live in. Support our employment options and keep our money local (and other young professional families like ours).
