The 2018 United Nations IPCC report gave us until 2030 to curb global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. If we go beyond this target it’s likely that life on planet earth will be near impossible. We entered the 2020s with the reality of the climate catastrophe unfolding all over the world: Australia is engulfed in an unprecedented inferno and Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia and home to 30 million people, is sinking and becoming uninhabitable. We need urgent and immediate action to curb global carbon emissions to stand a chance at limiting the devastating impacts of this global crisis. If the climate emergency is not addressed we are studying and preparing for a future that no longer exists.
We demand that:
- Union of Kingston Students declare a climateemergency
- UKS lobby and pressure Kingston University to declarea climate emergency
- UKS lobby and pressure the university to divest fromany fossil fuel investments or refuse any corporate sponsorships from companies engaged in fossil fuel extraction
- UKS support the UK School Climate Network’s call for Friday climate strikes on Feb 14th, March 13th and a month of global climate action in April
