Decision 2018 - Canada Games Pool

10 lanes is absolutely needed. A recreation 6 lane or even 8 just isn't good enough. Having moved to Toronto recently (but still pay New West taxes on a property) I can see how some city pools here awful and do not at all help competitive swimming (whether it is age group or masters). Do it right and rebuild it properly!

Canada Games is perfect.

The Hyack Swim Club has offered to pay half the cost. I appreciate the efforts to being conscious with the budget, but the City of New Westminster or whoever is stick-handling this project, is being very short sighted on this matter (expanding the extra 2 swimming lanes).

New West has the opportunity to carry on a tradition of sports excellence while meeting the needs of residents. I hope that council takes the time to fully understand the implications of a decision to not build a competition style pool. In the past council catered to a small group and replaced the Kiwanis outdoor pool spending Millions for a pool that is open for approx 6 weeks every year. New Westminster and the region need a pool that replaces and adds to the legacy of the Canada Games Pool

Without proper facilities how can we support proper growth in our Athletes.

Build it right the first time with no regrets.

We have so few competition pools so to loose one more makes the competitions that much harder on the swimmers...as they will always have to travel. That may be the point that they drop swimming as too expensive. More kids swimming means we need more competition pools period.

This pool was a staple of fun and functionality while I was growing up. There is a severe lack of aquatic facilities which encourage competitive swimming and serve the athletic community.

World class facilities in the lower mainland are needed! Spend some extra money to do things right and encourage amateur athletes! In the long run the lessons they learn will increase productivity, decrease healthcare costs and most importantly enrich the lives of future generations!

10 lanes is a must if you are going to consider the future of swimming. When the investment into a new facility is already so large, this extra bit of cost really is a minimal increase for maximum benefit!

Trained here with a friend for a bit while preparing for the 2007 Parapan Am Games. Facilities like these are essential for the wellbeing of a competitive team such as Hyack, and it'd be a sin to see this go. Leave it be... It is both a great facility and an integral part of Canadian Swimming history!

Swimming for hyack growing up with there great facility helped me achieve my dreams of competing in the Paralympic games, in 2008 Beijing. The fact that thsy want to change the facility to a 25m pool is dumbfounding, and must be stopped.

Our family has no competitive swimmers in it and therefore I believe I have a more objective opinion. I believe that building a facility with swim lanes to support swim meets, and provide residents more opportunity to swim for fitness, is a key feature to include in the design.

I am a resident of New Westminster with 3 kids who use the pool only for leisure. We have never felt that the design that supports competitive swimming has affected our enjoyment of the facilities. The future pool should be able to support both leisure and competitive swimming events.

My kids have competed and I have officiated at many competitions at the Canada Games Pool. Surely there is a way to accommodate leisure swimmers while keeping the many developmental and local business benefits of swimming competitions in Nwe Westminster! Do the right thing - save competitive swimming in New Westminster!

Before you go about making strong claims, please review the facts and statistics that pertain to your argument. At the Rio 2016 Games, 27 athletes were chosen to represent Canada for swimming. Consider this, only 27 out of thousands of Canadian swimmers qualified to attend the highest level of competition that exists. Making the Olympic team does not solely depend on the quality of coaching that the athletes receive; the process is a long-term commitment that involves the swimmer's individual dedication and work ethic, alongside the efforts and support of his/her team, family, and friends. It is absurd to expect every team to produce an Olympic athlete every four years, let alone ever. There are hundreds of clubs with Swimming Canada and only 27 qualifiers - that's less than one athlete per club. Becoming an Olympian is a rare achievement that should be celebrated, not expected. Furthermore, Hyack (or any club for that matter) does not "still" athletes; please double check your spelling, as it severely weakens your argument. May I ask, with which club did Madisen Jacques previously train before being "stolen" by Hyack? Also, Peter Huang swam in the summer league, which employs a totally different structure and training style from winter swimming. The two divisions of competitive swimming are incomparable, as summer swimmers do not race anything longer than a 200 IM nor do they race long course. As for the current Top 50 athletes, there is only one Canadian: Kylie Masse. She is a world record holder and an Olympic medallist. To expect to see a current Hyack athlete on that list is completely unreasonable, as the other swimmers are essentially all pros or collegiate competitors. I'm vice president of barnaby water polo club and I am 100% for a competitive pool. Surrey did it right and Kamloopsdid it right and Burnaby/ NewWestmi ster are the hub of Vancouver and it is essential for our communities.
