It is essential that all construction stop and be revisited due to the recent flooding throughout the county. Even if home were not flooded, streets and roads were impacted. There is no place for water to go when continued construction is occurring.

In 1979 my home in Jackson, MS, not in a flood zone, received 6’ of water, along with others in a large portion of Northeast Jackson. Culverts and creeks had not been properly maintained or cleaned out. Over-development along the banks of the Pearl River put large residential and commercial areas under water.
Water took a full week to subside. There was a passionate outcry from residents of the capital city of Mississippi. Yet, four years later, it happened again. NOTHING HAD BEEN DONE BY PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF THE CITY AND COUNTY.
Please take action now. The time is now.

I live about 200 yds North from the Sarasota County line. Guess where our storm water run-off goes - that's right, right into Sarasota. One hand washes or floods the other. We have newly permitted major building projects to our immediate east and west along University Blvd. Manasota voters need to wake up and scrutinize who is running the local manufacturer-builder-commissioner-industrial complex. Study the issues, vote your conscience.

It has been evident that the climate is changing in Sarasota. The number of disasters, floods, sewage breaks, etc., has increased in recent years, indicating that citizens are no longer safe in their neighborhoods. The Commissioners' approval of multiple building projects without ensuring adequate support for infrastructure to address subdivision flooding, county water, adequate sewer systems, and roads impacts County residents' homes, safety and quality of life.

It is expected that water management during our frequent storms is not a perfect science. However, the ferocity and volume of water was not manageable under current conditions. Answers to the questions of what changed, and what needs to change, are key. Let’s go after identifying the changing dynamics in our local environment, including natural and human designed development issues so we can identify our new targets and set common goals to be best prepared for the future. The only constant in the world is change. We cannot continue to manage using knowledge gained 50 years ago and try to apply that to today’s problem set.

There is something more at play here other than rain. I have been a resident of Sarasota since 1988. I currently live in Colonial Oaks. Several neighbors experienced flooding here. Residents that have been in this community for 20 plus years said they have never experienced this before. If an investigation is not done now, we risk continued property damage in the future.

This is Florida. Florida needs swamp land. Back in the later 1990’s Colonial Gables flooded like it did with Debby. The county opened up the Celery fields so as to hold water. It worked! No flooding, with all the storms we have had since then. Now the commisioners allowed so much raping of our lands, oblivious to where storm water would go. I want a moratorium from the unnecessary building. I could go on about how our roads are packed with cars etc, I’ll save that for another day. Stop development now.
