I wrote to Stonewall on this many months ago. I am frightened to say what I believe publically for fear of retribution.

As a Transsexual I’m deeply concerned over the recently developments and polarisation of the whole discussion around Self ID. It has become a mantra with all the associated religious dogma that goes with it. Stonewall has accepted one extreme position and in doing so have thrown the 5000 holders of a GRC under a bus and placed that risk and danger.

Come on Stonewall, please do not silence women, in particular, by shutting down debate on this important issue.

Author and transsexual woman, 42 years post op and opposed to self ID or that birth certificates can be changed other than on genuine medical grounds. Being transsexual IS a condition and those suffering from it need proper medical and psychiatric assessment not just a pathway that is entirely self declared. This puts both women and transsexuals in potential jeopardy from abusers of the simplicity. We have to contemplate the worst case scenario, not just those who want things as easy as possible. Altering your legal status for life should involve more than just stating it. A mutual bond of trust with society and care about the future of the person considering such a significant step need protecting. Changing sex should not be made as easy as changing socks.

Closing down debate over a rights issue is only valid if it's clearly one-sided, if one side is clearly harmful or belittling the other, and needs containing. Here there is strong evidence that the dogmatic pursuit of extending trans rights is causing harm to women, both symbolic (we can't talk about ourselves as biological females and the oppression predicated on that without being called bigots) and practical (the actual invasion of women's spaces, the loss of safe spaces, and in extremis actual physical attacks on women).

Have no problem with people wanting to live their life as they see fit 'if it doesnt hurt anyone'. But they are hurting people and it's time that was called out and stopped.

The homophobia inherent in much trans rights activism shames Stonewall's original aims.

Soul destroying to see your organisation support this move by entitled men to disrespect and delegitimise ALL women, whether transsexual or not

I'm pro-woman. Please don't teample on my rights. I think everyone deserves human rights, but I'm sick of men trying to move women out of the way.

Negotiation and consultation with the affected groups is the right way to deal with this, not riding roughshod over women and refusing to listen to genuine concerns. We've been bullied enough. It's time for our views to be listened to and respected.
