As a DC resident, former DCPS lawyer/administrator for over 23 years, and parent of a DCPS teacher, I strongly support this petition.

During this severe time it is safer for teachers, students, staff members and families to go virtual asap. I can’t see how city officials especially the mayor and chancellor allowing this to happen. Forcing in person during this horrible time. Shame on you all.

Terminate all access to water fountains ASAP and reinstate water bottles. Send masks violators home.

Also we need to ensure that all students are being tested. ECE never gets tested because they can not fill the tube with saliva yet they are the grade level that spends more than 2 hrs without a mask on

Please do more to reduce transmission at schools to protect the most vulnerable in our communities. We will help support your efforts!... but we need your leadership and action to improve mitigation measures now. At our school, we have a 6 year old who finished Leukemia treatment last Wednesday. His family was so looking forward to a healthy Christmas celebration but he got Covid on Friday and now his high risk single mom and brother who have severe asthma have it too. A 10 year old has been alone in his room for 6 days (including Christmas) because he tested positive at school because he has a newborn sister who is still at the hospital NICU.. BUT he was really sick 2 weeks ago. He probably isn't even contagious anymore. His family needed more guidance and access to rapid tests to see if he is still contagious or just lingering positive via the PCR. We need a dedicated COVID coordinator now and all the other measures above ASAP! We can and must do better for our communities. We know how to keep kids safe at school... take action now and let's do it!

As a DCPS educator, these measures are crucial in mitigating a wave that medical and scientific experts say will be similar if not worse than the first wave of Covid back in March 2020.

As a parent who had a scholar that was a close contact who MISSED live instruction because of it I have GREAT cause for concern. Repeated exposure and infection is a health hazard and is unacceptable. Placing mask mandate enforcement on teachers and administrators without a system of consequence behavior ladder is absolutely unacceptable to hold students accountable. We MUST do something different in 2022.
