I wish to see a change in the law. This change needs to address the balance between the large pub companies and the huge rents imposed upon struggling landlords; the excessive beer duty inflicted on breweries, particularly the small independent breweries; the ridiculously cheap beer being sold in supermarkets with which neither breweries nor landlords can possibly compete; the binge drinking, particularly by teenagers, as a direct result of cheap supermarket beer, for which the pubs are being held responsible; and a stop to local ale being ostracised from local pubs by large pub companies because they can’t compete on price with the larger breweries. I wish to see a change in the law because I believe that without these changes, the pleasure of enjoying a pint of good local ale in my local pub with my neighbours and friends will no longer be possible due to pubs and breweries being forced to close. The local pub is the heart of a community, and is one of the few traditional British pastimes that we would like to hold onto. Don’t take this pleasure away from us.
