We, the undersigned, petition "DALPA" to negotiate the following addition to the pilot uniform policy in the upcoming (2012) contract:
- Approve leather jackets as part of the official Delta pilot uniform.
Leather jackets:
1) Can pull double duty.
-Removable name tag and shoulder boards allow pilots to wear the jacket while in street clothes during layovers.
2) Keep pilots warmer than the jacket/trench coat combo.
3) Provide for a more professional aviator appearance (vs. the trench coat).
4) Fit in flight deck closets.
-Nearly 52 % of our fleet (387 planes) have small flight deck closets that do not accommodate jackets and trench coats for 2 pilots.
We are not asking the company to abandon the double breasted jackets and trench coats. We simply wish to add leather jackets to the list as an approved alternative to the current winter uniform.
We believe a carefully selected jacket, with attention to name tag and shoulder board design, will produce a very professional look the company can be proud of while providing pilots with the comfort, warmth, and functionality they deserve.
The feedback from the flight deck has been consistent regarding the lack of space in our closets. I am currently reaching out to union reps to ensure this functional fix is on their radar for the next contract talk. Post this link on your crew Facebook groups and text the petition to three other pilots today.

The momentum behind adding leather jackets to our uniform policy is clear and undeniable. Contact your local representative today to insist they prioritize this item in the upcoming negotiations.

Yes please. My husband is constantly complaining about how cold it gets on the jumpseat and the current gear is just bulky and outdated. Make it happen.

Professional and functional. Why is this even a question?

About time. Those closets are a joke and the trench coats are always getting wrinkled. Leather makes way more sense for the flight deck anyway.
