Having worked with Dr Maggie on a documentary and found her to be not only impressively knowledgeable but a great communicator and all-around nice person, the DM's article struck a nerve. I wholeheartedly endorse this petition.

This was an appalling article that showed deep rooted sexist and racist views. I would like to live in a country where I can trust main-stream media not to give a mouthpiece to such outdated views.

Although outrageous, its unsurprising the DM made such remarks. As a mother of a black girl, I can only say that both Dr Peiris and Dr Adrein-Pocock are truly inspirational. I watched the discussion on Newsnight and were so struck by both womens knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. I would love either or both women to go to my daughters school and prove to young girls that science/astronomy etc is a subject they should embrace.

I am absolutely disgusted by the insults to two highly-qualified women. The assumptions inherent in the comments by the Daily Mail are that women and people from ethnic minorities would not have anything of relevance to say - this is the type of journalism that encourages hatred of non 'white, male' groups and undermines hard-earned educational and research acheivements. Daily Mail - a sincere apology and a resolution to judge people by their merit is required.

Firstly, why the Daily Mail decided to comment on theories of the expansion of the universe, a subject well beyond the comprehension of its readership and journalists, baffles me. Secondly their disparaging treatment of two excellent academics on the basis of their gender and nationality was appalling, and once again exposes the tabloid for what it really is - the bigoted mouthpiece of the backward proletariat of this country. The irreverent articles they publish can hardly be considered "journalism", let alone "news". In some ways it's a shame they didn't try some phone hacking and end up going down the pan like that other pointless excuse for a newspaper - News of the World...

In the first place, why The Daily Mail would even try and comment on discoveries related to expansion of the universe, a subject way beyond the comprehension of its readership and journalists, baffles me. Secondly to be so disparaging to two excellent academics on the basis of nationality and gender was appalling, and once again exposes the tabloid for what it is - the bigoted mouthpiece of the backward proletariat of this country. Their irreverent articles have hardly ever fitted the definition of "journalism", let alone "news".
