Dear Governor Christie and Commissioner Schundler: In response to Councilman Fulop’s recent petition drive regarding the extension of Superintendent Epps’ contract and because of the mistruths he is presenting as facts with no regard for the negative implications on the students, staff and community at large, the undersigned write to you to present the feelings and wishes of the usually silent majority. Under Dr. Epps’ leadership, the people of Jersey City have regained confidence in the quality and equity of the educational opportunities for our students. He demonstrates on a daily basis that the children are his number one priority and that everyone’s opinion is valued. He is fully accessible to parents and the community and goes above and beyond in bringing clarity of process and purpose when implementing a new initiative. Dr. Epps has been successful in reducing the drop-out rate, increasing the attendance rate for both students and staff, and introducing academic programs that address the needs of all students as defined by NCLB and as evidenced by the recognition of the Broad Foundation. Is the school district where it could be? No. Is the school district on the right course to getting all students to reach their full potential? A resounding YES! We respectfully submit that Dr. Charles T. Epps, Jr. is the right choice for Jersey City Superintendent of Schools and support the extension of his contract through 2013.
