We, the below signed citizens and tax payers of the Keokuk Community School District, want the Keokuk Board of Education to create, implement, and enforce a dress code for all school sponsored activities. This policy should be consistent with current board policy 502.12 that states that student expression must be appropriate to assure that the students learn and meet the goals of the school activity and that the potential audience is not exposed to material that may be inappropriate for their level of maturity.

I’m curious what this petition will actually accomplish? Policy 502.12 is pretty ambiguous and leaves a hefty amount of discretion at the hands of employees and faculty of the school district to determine what appropriate express is and what isn’t. Isn't that the job of a parent? I’d like to see someone define what is “inappropriate for their level of maturity” for a high school kid, age 17-18. Is there some sort of a written sliding scale when it comes to the nature of dress, depending on how old the person is? Or is it a dictatorial blanket code that is applied ages K-12? I simply don’t understand how someone could support such a bureaucratic policy like an arbitrary dress code enforced at things like athletic events, dances, etc - given the dearth of information in the "highlight." Clearly, there are some commonsensical things that are indecent to society that should be handled appropriately by administrators, but that isn’t what this is stating. As a matter of fact, there is very little substance on this petition at all. It’s certainly not enough to merit a signature. I have to wonder what the catalyst was for such a petition even coming to light. Who was offended and in what regard?

Some of the outfits I saw at the last dance were totally innapropriate for a school event. Kids should know better.
