I have a child who is attending Payton in the Fall, and this new schedule will not work as well for our family.

I will be a student who is interested in playing sports and if school ended later I would have to miss class to go to games and I would not get home until at least 8 or 9 pm and I would then have to start my homework

8 am is more appropriate start time. Especially for those the do activities after school.

The shifted times will make my daughter's 50+min commute on CTA longer and more crowded as it will now coincide with rush hour. There are after school activities she is now unable to participate in because she can't make it to them before their start time (which is not shifted). It will mean there's no time to eat before the activities that she can just make it to. And less time for homework, family and relaxing in the evenings. Will this wind up costing CTA more than it saves CPS?

Too late for extra curicular activities. later days means later nights. Already up to 12pm- 1am doing homework. walking home in the dark is not a good idea.

8am is a far more optimal start time for students:
1) gets them up and out in morning
2) better matches school time and extra curriculars to daylight hours (winter).
3) preserve a family dinner time which is treasured and important to high school students (4:30 end time makes extracurriculars go until 6 or 6:30 - and often much later if away games or activities, by the time they return home will be 8pm or later.
4)kids already stay up too late doing homework, dont need reason to stay up later
5) many kids will be travelling home in the dark every day come winter
6) not sure how bussing could save money at Payton. We as parents already drive to a lot of sports games bc buses are not available. Most (if not all) students travel to/from by public transportation. Not sure what busses are at issue here (except maybe 1-2 for special ed).

Since Payton students commute from all parts of the city, dismissal at 4:30pm will mean that many students will commute in the dark during central standard time putting them at greater risk from the obstacles to safe passage between home and school. Further, these students will have less time to devote to school work after school, such as meeting at libraries or staying after school to work with classmates before going home. They will also be commuting at about the same time that the evening work rush begins which will increase all types of traffic (pedestrian, CTA/Metra commuters vehicles). The primary concern is student welfare & safety, but this time change will affect and disrupt the schedules of students, faculty, staff and parents. It also disrupts the alignment of schedules between other schools within Chicago, Cook, Lake & DuPage county with which Payton interacts.

The change to the start time is detrimental to valuable extracurricular activities and family time not to mention long commutes happening later in the evening for high school students!

The previous start times of 7:45 am to 8:00 am were working quite well in rounding out the entirety of a student's ability to commute, learn and participate in extracurriculars. The adjustment is erratic and irrational as it relates to the welfare or our students.

Longer commute time. Majority of extracurricular activities cut off. Not enough time for homework. Interschool activities jeopardized because of different schedule. Please restore the prior schedule.

New time will make for much tougher commute and greatly reduce the ability to participate in after school activities.

My kids would have to be late to their extra curricular activities - Chicago Childrens Choir - this would make it more difficult to get homework done as the kids will likely sleep in the AM ... there would be less family time in the evening, and I will need to start my work later as I drive my two sons to school. The reasoning makes no sense for high schoolers who use public trans.
Overall this is going to put a lot more stress on my family to fit everything in / in an already crowded schedule. What about after school sports and other activities ... they will all be compromised !

CPS sites the cost for busing; the vast majority of students take public transportation, so doesn't seem to apply. A later start time will mean that participating in after school activities will impact both family time and homework.

I'm signing because our kids are already challenged to finish nightly homework assignments after arriving home from extracurricular activities. We need them to get to bed at a reasonable time so they can recharge for the next school day. This will make the situation that much worse.

Making such a momentous change with such short notice is fundamentally unfair to students and their families. Many students will have to abandon/alter their activities and work schedules which will impact their continuing education. This should only be implemented, if at all, for the 2016/17 school year.

The later start time will have a far greater negative impact than the small amount of benefit that CPS thinks it would gain. It will make it almost impossible for my student to participate in extra-curricular activities, it will make her 1 hour commute on public transportation even longer and will reduce the amount of time we have to spend together as a family in addition to other impacts. Please keep the start time the same as it was for 2014-2015
