CPS Students For Change in Start and End Times

Taking public transportation to and from school makes it impossible for my girls to attend their non-CPS after school programs that begin at 4:30 at various locations. There is a whole host of other concerns regarding this earlier start time, one being how late the children will need to stay up to complete their school work after their evening activities, diner and chores. The later day also makes it impossible for many teachers to continue coaching or sponsoring clubs, sport and activities. The results of these activities being cancelled will be devastating.

This proposed change significantly impacts the time we have later in the day, which we need for homework as well as family.

Students need time to study during the day ( and not at night) and time to spend with their family!

That day is horrible for high school children

This is a very late start and end time that conflicts with schedules but also puts the kids commute right in the middle of rush-hour.

I do not agree with the students starting later and ending later I feel it effects the safety for children including my child to be traveling late by herself considering she has to take two trains there and two trains home this will interfere with a lot of after school dr appointments and activities and let's not forget the most important thing homework she is up already late enough due to all the homework it's only going to hurt the students it's definitely not beneficial to anyone. I refuse to believe that changing the time will help anyone or anybody or anything.

Thanks Delores Please send this to every one you know at South Shore and any other school. I would like to form a major parent, student protest at CPS head quarters.

This change in the school day is being made for the wrong reasons and without community input.

A 4:30 end with a long commute home is crazy! Please use some common sense and put the start time back to 8am.

I as a parent want to keep the old start and finish time for my children to attend their schools I want my children to start school at 8 and be home by 4:30 The Board has made enough changes without parent approval.

Are you Alderman listing? to the parents and students of CPS. How they will be affected by this I guess it doesn't matter to you, the impact that this will have mentally physically and emotionally on our children, how they will be affected, does it even matter? $2.5 million in a extremely small amount when the entire budget is $6 billion. Does anyone care about the safety of the children? Crossing gang lines after 9 pm or later, to the kid that goes to schools on the North Side and live in the MOST dangerous sections of the South Side. How about the additional money on bus fair for the parents after 8pm the student Ventra Card acts as a regular Ventra at $2.25 per ride. Attached is a petition that has had 100 parent sign in the last hour. Listen to us for a change and do the right thing and push these times back. Is saving $2.5 million dollars worth the lives of the children and families that will be affected for ever? If it matters change the time. $2.5 million won't save CPS!!!

I disagree with the choice to change CPS school hours. This is not beneficial to my child or any child. As a working parent I am able to make sure my son gets to school safely and I am still able to get to work on time. If the hours are changed he loses that security he will have less time on homework no time on extracurricular a and its not fair. Our children take public transportation they are not bused in and should not be affected by this lousy decision. If my son is put in a unsafe situation because of this decision I will hold CPS officials and the board that made this decision personally responsible.

Unfair to students to change start and end time of the school day

All high schools begin at 8am or earlier to maximize the teaching day and balance after school activities. This change (without any parent input) puts Payton students at a severe disadvantage to access after school activities especially those outside of school

I have 2 children who are Payton students, both of whom are adversely impacted by this completely unnecessary scheduling change (and are both acutely unhappy about it.)

I believe it is very important that the existing school times be maintained. Not only has the Payton academic staff learned to maximize the effectiveness of the teaching day with this schedule, but it also optimizes the overall day and nonacademic activity participation. An additional factor should be the safety of the kids and the ability of parents to weave the scholastic day into their own professional schedule and commitments. The change is a negative on all these fronts. The change is being made without ANY community consultation or input, without the support of educators, administrators, parents, or students, and for all the wrong reasons

The late end of the day will interfere with my sons ability to balance aftershcool activities and homework as well as having him commute home later in the day during rush hour and often after dark. In addition, the late morning start will not allow me to drop him on the way into work when needed.
