We, the surgical providers at CPMG, feel that working 12 hour OR blocks are unsustainable. They pose an unnecessary risk to patient safety, result in suboptimal outcomes and are causing provider burnout. We request that the CPMG leadership change back to 10 hour OR blocks by May 30, 2023.

Updates

November 17, 2022

CPMG leadership is still hiding behind silence while we continue to break our backs in these 12 hour blocks. Do not think for a second that your exhaustion is invisible because we are building a clear record of their negligence.

November 17, 2022

The massive surge in support proves that CPMG leadership can no longer ignore the dangerous burnout they are forcing on us. We have built undeniable momentum and now it is time to force them to stop putting patient safety at risk for the sake of their broken scheduling model.

The anesthesia group fully supports our surgeons’ well being. I’m amazed they can operate in a 12-hr shift. The airline industry would accept this duration of a shift, but not accept the long hours in the days surrounding it. Our profession has built in many safeguards for surgery, but fatigue and burnout can nullify these protections at a catastrophic cost. Let’s not wait for that to happen.

I agree with the need to switch back to 10-hour KASC days. The timeline is ample to secure a North venue with which to contract. KASC staff have been stressed to a breaking point and physician wellbeing is clearly suffering. We need to remember the Quadruple Aim again and bring physician and staff wellbeing back into the picture. What started as a temporary measure now is embedded in our operations with the 5-7 time period being measured as a metric for efficiency. Thank you to all who are thoughtfully contemplating this request.

I think it is safe to say that the surgical subspecialties/anesthesia (whom I daily observe offering amazing care and are not easily replaceable) are done with our tenure being scapegoats for the larger financial problems our company has faced. Immense human capital has been consumed in what was supposed to be a temporary solution. For the most part, we do everything that is asked of us. We have given our fair share in this particular area of working long, inequitable hours. If our company embodies compassion, humanity, and democracy in the least bit, swift action is crucial to a successful future and to retaining a healthy, engaged workforce. Without swift change, collateral damage continues to accrue which has a net negative impact on company culture and economics, nonetheless.

I fully support a more sustainable work-place environment. Burnout is a significant issue that has been shown, over and over again, to lead to worse patient outcomes. Let's take care of our surgeons AND our patients.

12 hour KASC days are taking a toll on the well being of our surgeons and are not sustainable for the well being of our physicians and the safety of our patients.

12 hour days need to stop. It is not safe for patient care.

I helped lead the orthopedic transition to 12-hour days along with Dave and Laura. It was physically and mentally exhausting for all surgeons, but we knew it was a mission to literally save the company. The realities of the situation were that Franklin was an aging facility and most of the staff seemed to be new and temporary. We anticipated that these issues would improve drastically over time. Unfortunately, we are still dealing with high staff turnover leading to us working with new staff, leadership turnover (Mary, Lucy) and a facility that has more wrinkles and age spots now than it did 3 years ago. The long days are causing burnout for both health plan and CPMG employees. If 12-hour days are the only option, there must be some effort made to serisously address the toll it is taking on everyone. We are, of course, in the business of improving the health and well-being of people, aren't we?

I feel strongly that patient safety gets overlooked with regard to positioned fatigue.
