It would be a huge relief to know that when it rains I don't have to worry about being stuck at home unable to get to work or not be able to get home until the road dries out. This is a great petition.

We have some land in Arroyo Salado and hope to move out there. But it would be impossible right now because of the unpredictability of the road condition. I work 4 days a week and need to be able to get in and out without risking my life.

As a long time resident of Ojo de la Vaca I think that putting any kind of paving on the road would make the drive coming off of the mesa much more dangerous during snow & ice conditions. I do support adding gravel or base course on the trouble spots.

County road 51 between 51C and Arroyo Salado desperately needs improvement. After rain and melting snow the road becomes very dangerous with deep slippery mud. I have missed work out of fear of going into the ditch and it is very stressful driving home at night. It also happens to be in an area where there is no cell phone reception which makes it doubly dangerous! Please improve the road with basecourse or gravel and maintenance. Thank You!

After rain (or snow melt) driving on CR51 becomes more than just a challenge; it's dangerous, particularly when there are other vehicles on the road. I personally have put my Jeep in the 'ditch' and I have had to delay my drive to work by several hours until the road becomes passable. I am not a road engineer, and I would leave the solution of how to best repair/maintain the road to the professionals at the department of public works, and within their limited budget. In the short term, there are a few spots that have become very treacherous, and I would appreciate it if the county would maintain those areas sooner rather than later. Thank you.

I would like to start by thanking you for stepping up the maintenance of the road. I am a mother of two and it has been some relief in raising them since you undertook CNTY RD 51 as a project. The intelligent engineering and base course that you already have applied to some areas of the road would work great in the remaining trouble spots. You are so close to making it a less dangerous road. There are only about three spots left that suck cars into the ditch. The first is the low area just after the powerlines, I have helped stranded drivers there multiple times. The second is the low land at the long straight away that bogs people down and the area past that near Arroyo salado gate. THanks again!

I support putting base course or equivalent on the bad spots as emergency vehicles would not make it up the road on a rainy day. Surfacing the road with chipseal or asphalt would make the road dangerous because of speeding, icing on the smooth surface and potholes would quickly appear as they do now in the lower section of the road. This would deface the rural character of the area and promote urbanization, overall burdening the County's budget.

I was working on our property recently when the rain started. I almost was unable to make it back to our home in Eldorado because the road had become next to impassable and my truck kept sliding toward the ditch no matter how carefully or slowly I drove. I was fortunate that no vehicles were coming from the other direction and was able to stay on the crown of the road and make it home. These conditions developed over a matter of just a couple of hours. This is not the first time this happened and I have lost many days of work there because I don't dare go out to Arroyo Salado if I suspect it may rain. In contrast, the roads the residents and land owners of Arroyo Salado have built and maintain at their own expense hold up much better under rain and melting snow conditions than the county road which we must travel and which we also support through our taxes.

Roads are very dangerous when wet and the chances of accidents are particularly high at these times. Sometimes I have to stay home and miss work because they are not safe to travel on.

There are 3 major bad spots from where 51C splits off of CR 51 to Arroyo Salado. Driving from 51C toward Ojo de la Vaca, the first 3/10 of a mile is the worst and many vehicles, even AWD vehicles (as in the photo) go off into the ditch. The road can turn to an absolute "sea of mud" in those areas and even with AWD and good tires you're only hope of staying on the road is to stay in the gravitational center. If you get off to one side, even a little bit, the vehicle quickly goes out of control and into the ditch. Those who have never driven through these spots at the peak of saturation, especially at night, have no idea just how scary and treacherous these sections can get. My neighbors and I have had many "white-knuckled" drives home through these spots, praying that no one is coming toward us because it's impossible for two vehicles to pass without one of them going into the ditch.
While the overall road has improved a little over the 12 years I've been here, these bad spots have gotten steadily worse to the point that with enough rain or melting snow, the road becomes almost impassible..., certainly not passible by 2WD vehicles and barely passible by AWD cars and 4X4 trucks. These areas are in rather desperate need of repair. If the county would fix these areas this year and then do regular maintenance with gravel (or basecourse or asphalt millings) each year, just a little each year, the road would quickly be in good shape and cost far, far less than chip seal, which most of us living out here are strongly against. Chip seal would destroy the character of the area and change the road from the leisurely, friendly-paced country road that it is, where neighbors and strangers alike often wave at each other, to fast paced pavement where people whiz past each other. It would also result in many more road kills of the abundant, local wildlife and require much more winter maintenance (sanding and plowing) as well.

Chip seal results in potholes and does not really lessen maintenance of the road. Potholes are quite dangerous as people swerve to avoid them.

CR 51 has come a long way and is much better than it's ever been ; it would take very little to make the bad spots at the powerlines & beyond much better , perhaps just 30 loads of gravel ; this would also greatly reduce the maintainance costs associated with frequent grading.

I strongly urge the county to remove the request to continue the chip seal on CR51. A chip sealed road is more treacherous in snow/ice conditions and will need more funds for maintenance, which the county might not guarantee. Base course and or gravel with continued grading is preferred. Thank you.
