The proposed funding “cap” of $1M for the Coronado Community Grant Program is artificial and arbitrary. The impact of such a “cap” is that many community non-profit organizations will not be able to provide necessary programs and services to meet current demand. The proposed $1M “cap” is at least 20% less than the need, and will therefore have negative ramifications for our community.
We ask City Council NOT to accept the Community Grant Program proposal being set forth for consideration with the arbitrary “cap” of $1M. Rather, we propose that specified grant funding amounts are withdrawn from the policy and determined by City Council annually based upon determined needs and interests of the community.

I’ve long thought the granting process was fairly loose in terms of the vetting process and organizations showing due diligence. I DONT think there should be a cap of $1M because needs change from time to time and I would hate to see a worthy organization not be able to make a request when needed due to a cap on the granting.
The arbitrary cap ties the hands of future City Councils. It also rips the rug out from under to so many dedicated, talented, and energetic volunteers. The cap was set by 'comparing funding levels in other cities.' Three points that make this questionable: 1. How many cities of our size have the property tax and TOT revenue and huge budget reserves that we do? 2. Cities fund community organizations in so many other ways besides community grants that it's very complex to tease out the actual funding levels. 3. What cities were examined and how similar are they to us, really? The 'fiscal responsibility' drum keeps being beaten, as if we're in a campaign cycle. We should not sacrifice support for our wonderful organizations and volunteers so that a campaign platform box can be checked.
