To Whom It May Concern, My name is Corey Hillman. I am writing with concerns that my family and I are struggling with. I know that no matter what I accomplish or how much I succeed that I can never change or make up for what I have taken from my victim and the pain I have caused his family and friends as well as mine. Rather than focus on the things I cannot change, I have spent my sentence doing everything possible to change the things I could. I am currently serving a fifty year sentence for second degree murder. As of today, I have served just shy of fourteen years and three months in addition to the six months served in Scott County Juvenile/Jail. My institutional record will show that I have completed all of my required treatment programs and then some. I have completed my High School Diploma and several college courses. I have served at the same institution for the last six years where I have worked at a private sector company nearly the entire time. For the last several years it has been recommended from my counselor to have a work release. This past January he found a work release that is willing to accept me if granted a release. I have also earned the support from administration here by being a model inmate. The situation I am struggling with is that in February, the Iowa Board of Parole granted me with a Gradual Release clearly stating that they wanted to see me take part in the Minimum Outs Program, working outside the fence. Unfortunately, I was informed that due to the nature of my crime, I was not permitted to take part in any such programs in the State of Iowa per Iowa Department of Corrections, despite the Iowa Board of Parole's request. The Parole Board is unwilling to change what they would like for me to complete therefore I am concerned about what awaits me if I am not allowed to work the Minimum Outs Program. As my instructional records supports, I am more than willing to do what is required to show that I am ready to be released, and prove I will be a part of the solution instead of the problem our society is faced with today. Here I sit someone who is willing to do whatever is asked of me. However, I am being asked to do something in order to earn my release that I am not capable of doing due to the State of Iowa's miscommunications. This has added a lot of stress to my family, supporters, and me for the reason I am asking that you please offer me any advice or help that you can. Thank you for your time and any help or advice that God willing you can offer. Sincerely, Corey Hillman
