I came to UAB in 1983 as a transfer student. After graduating, I got my first job at UAB and stayed for the next 27 years. I was part of team that played a big part in the effort to transform UAB from a commuter school to a more traditional college experience. A huge part of that experience for young people is college athletics - especially football. It gives the university national exposure like nothing else can, and helps cement a lifelong connection to their alma mater. I have many great memories of the football program. I often went to watch practice in the afternoons. I was in the stands for UAB’s first D1 game at Auburn. I made road trips to Florida, Tulane, Florida State, West Point (twice) and other places. I went out and celebrated after UAB’s first D1 win (over North Texas). I watched an overmatched UAB team take down LSU in Death Valley – on their Homecoming night. This year I watched UAB be competitive in every game, including at #1 Mississippi State. With one more win, UAB becomes bowl-eligible for the first time in many years. The future is bright for this program under a great new coach in Bill Clark. I see the excitement finally returning to the program. This program “death threat” situation every few years simply has to stop. If UAB cares about continuing to grow this university as a more traditional college experience, the administration needs to line up with the city and the donors and SUPPORT the football program and its coach. People are willing to step up with their checkbooks, as we saw with the ill-fated attempt at hiring Jimbo Fisher or to build an on-campus stadium. New student centers, green spaces, campus housing and modern campus recreation centers are great. But in this state, if your campus is quiet and dark on Saturdays in the fall, what is there to attract an 18 yr old kid to become a Blazer? With all due respect, it’s not a world-class medical center.
