WHEREAS:
Palestinian and Israeli non-combatant civilians continue to be the victims of violence, leaving behind family and friends.
The scriptures outline the necessity for peace, understanding and forgiveness. In Arabic, the word “Islam” shares its root with “Salam,” which means peace. “Shalom” also shares this same root. This coincidence stems from the common origin of Judaism and Islam.
The killing of civilians only breeds more hatred and misunderstanding, planting the seed for violent response.
The killing of civilians on both sides represents an explicit breach of international law.
We student groups and other members of the University of Maryland community can still passionately educate and advocate for our respective stances without supporting violence toward innocent civilians.
THEREFORE:
We together mourn the civilian casualties on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
We condemn any and all violence targeting civilians in this conflict.
Seeing all these signatures scroll past makes me feel like maybe there is actually a path toward some kind of common ground here even if people keep telling me it is naive. I really did not think this would resonate so deeply with so many people on campus who are clearly just as tired of all this heartbreak as I am.
