In reading the Seattle developers website, they are marketing this four-story building to outside investors for student housing for the University on the westside. Since many of the 200+ units are studio and one bedroom, this isn't being built for families, as much as single people and couples. Stacking that many people, into an 'affordable' rental (which is code for cheap construction and likely poor management), is being build for the most money per square foot, instead of quality of living.
Also, how interesting the city likes putting all these affordable units jammed together on locations like east of the butte. Like they don't want to see it, unless they are going to Costco? Also being marketed to students, which means more cars driving on the roads to the westside to go to the University, just add to wear and tear on the roads. Not many bikes and no one (except for a rare few) will walk that far to go to that school. And you're complaining about money for roads, when your planning where you build, so poorly?
And since you dumped Juniper Ridge for the four-year school location (which was met to have apartments by it), change your rules in allow your four-story apartments by the westside University. We know you can change RULES, since you are going over the height limit on this building(s) by OUR STATE PARK. But your actions show you care nothing about our state park. We're beginning to wonder what the city cares about, besides overselling and building more poorly thought out developments. Place affordable housing projects on the westside, where students can actually use it. Make this one smaller and more livable, where people will actually like living there, and not just trash it, causing the police being called to have to come and take care of more problems. (They have their hands full already.)
It's really bad, when the city sneaks through projects like this, and NOT SAY A WORD to the people who actually live around the butte, who love the park and

The butte is a landmark for many, But especially for us bendites. We deserve a say in what goes on with this matter.

i can't believe the city of bend is letting tourist and people from out of state have a say on what goes on in our town. Bend people and the east side need say in things like these.

I live outside of the Bend area but have loved the area throughout my lifetime. Pilot Butte is an iconic place in my childhood.
I have also seen how close high density housing can change areas, and certainly it will impact the area and the State Park. My thoughts are with you.

Why can't they put the apartments somewhere else? That's obviously not a good place for them. Yes we have a housing problem but we can't destroy the things we love about Bend trying to fix it.

Basically a flawed idea without concern for public input. Buildings are to high exceeding the cities own limits and there is no plan to handle the additional traffic in a already congested traffic area. Public safety and concerns must be addressed!!!

Offhand I can't think of a worse location. There are enough apartments and senior living businesses packed in that area right now. Traffic will become impossible.

This is insane....I'm not a longtime Bendite...but I moved here because of the "love for the land" attitude and strong sense of stewardship....this does not say stewardship!!!

Its time to expand Bend. People shouldnt have to move because of no affordable housing when THE CITY LIMITS HAVENT BEEN EXPANDED TO FIT THE POPULATION. KEEP BEND AN AMAZING PLACE! THE ISSUES CREATED ARE FAR WORSE THAN PROVIDING EVEN TO LOW INCOME!
Although Bend needs more apartment options and affordable housing opportunities, there must be comprehensive planning throughout any proposed project and its planning process. Please, let's carefully think about this project and if it is the right fit for Bend.
