We don't need this building. Instead they need to redo the path/road for us hikers. I don't want to see tall buildings when I go outside.

The traffic and parking problems caused by building these new luxury apartments are going to be far-reaching and will deteriorate Pilot Butte.

Love your comment but I think we do understand the state we live in. It may not always be clear because there are all sorts of issues beyond the ones you mention and then we're try to accomplish things that aren't easy. Accomplishing things in this environment is a horse of a different color. In some ways it has little to do with the reality of which you speak because you can't get around the system by waiting for it to change. This is mostly about navigating to a goal that all can feel good about when many things are standing in your way. It's a worthy goal but will it happen. The jury is still out but, to be honest, while we on the right track, we probably trusted some people we shouldn't have trusted and that made it harder. We keep fighting and learning. A big break could still happen in 10 minutes and we're home free. We've set the stage pretty well and that's why we think there is still a chance even though time is short.

Maybe you people don't understand what state you live in. As you should know Oregon has a law requiring cities over 20,000 residents to have an urban growth plan before they can expand. Bend's plan was rejected and has been sent back to the city with a directive from the state. The states directive demands that the city fill in every single square inch of undeveloped land and increase density to a much higher level than it has in the past. So the city is currently rewriting the code to increase the minimum development density to 7.5 residences per acre for single family. They are getting rid of development buffer zones between less dense areas and new development. They are going to rewrite the code to allow for an increased height limit on all downtown development including 5 story structures for Galveston and Newport. The state has demanded that the city increase the number of multi family (apartment) developments. Furthermore the state would like the city to build a mass transit system so that some day Bend can be just like Portland which is their idea of a perfect city. For those of you who are unaware of Portland's latest move to increase density they have eliminated the parking requirements for apartments in order to force people to take mass transit. So any new apartment will only have half the parking needed for the residents. Bend will probably soon follow their lead.
On the west side the city has met this directive by trying to pawn off their garbage dump and the adjacent mine site to OSU Cascades so that the residents of Oregon can pay for that development. On the east side you have this apartment complex and many more like it to come. There are currently dozens of huge apartment complexes being planned for the east side. None for the west side.
It is not about the view, or the Butte, or the park or anything else other than real estate development. Bend's politicians and Visit Bend are unabashedly self promotional and their vision

Plenty of property elsewhere to build apartments. Keep the development away from our town's landmark.

If I wanted to live in an area that had been destroyed by greed, I could move back to Southern California. I arrived in Bend in 1977; I would never guess I'd see what is happening to this area now.l

I think the west side has plenty of room for high density housing. Not a state park or its surrounding area.

i used to live in The Commons apartments. For 10 years we lived there. My dog and I used to walk the Butte every day, for almost as many years. He's old now, can't do it. He still loves the park. It's sad to see how it's eroded from misuse of those that "love" it.
