The GG Awards are juried by intelligent people. Perhaps those who wish this book's award removed should read it WITH their children and have a CONVERSATION about it.

True, I found the language vulgar, some of the story shocking, but I persisted and in the end found it to be a valuable story that needs to be told. Having overheard the language of young teenagers on many occasions, the language used in the text is not that extraordinary. It may not be "nice", but it's real.

A librarian tried to stop me taking out books from the teenagers' section when I was 11. My mother told her to let me have what I wanted - it was my choice, not hers. If this book has the potential to help keep even one child from committing suicide, then it is worth all the gold in the world.

The Quill and Quire gave this book a mediocre review back in November, criticizing the lack of character and plot development, and mentioning the overbearing vulgar language, stating that it is unsuitable to the younger end of JA fiction. Presumably, that reviewer has the credentials to back up her review.
Barbara Kay also has the credentials to critique, having taught English Literature at the post-secondary level, as well as working as a book reviewer in the past. She is also an author.

I think the stupidest thing we can do as lover of books is to censor them. Life isn't neat or clean. Books shouldn't be either.

Sorry. Spent all my energy yelling about this in my living room while tweeting and now I'm out of things to say. Except that the people critiquing the book's literary merit have no understanding of what constitutes literary merit. And now I must go and read.
