Columbia Students in Appreciation for Public Safety and the NYPD
On behalf of all of us signed below, students from both the Jewish and general student bodies at Columbia University in the City of New York, we would like to thank Public Safety and the NYPD for their outstanding bravery and assistance.
On May 7th, 2025, Butler library was invaded by protestors. Their method of achieving their goals was as follows: disrupting the study sessions of all students who were working hard to prepare for their final exams in Butler Library.
In this complicated scenario, Public Safety and the NYPD have shown their unwavering dedication to keeping us, the students, safe. In the face of students occupying and defacing the library, they handled the situation in a masterful manner given the circumstances.
This letter of appreciation will not mend the wounds of the two Public Safety officers who were injured in their attempts to protect us. Instead it will hopefully act as a token of gratitude and provide evidence that we, the students, recognize what they had done for us and thank them for it.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the NYPD for their swift and professional response at Columbia University on May 7. Their presence helped maintain safety and order, protecting students and university property from violent protests. I appreciate their dedication to keeping our community safe. While I believe everyone has the right to peaceful protest, violence is never an acceptable means of expressing dissent. I commend the NYPD for their role in upholding public safety and order.
I was stuck inside Butler due to everything that happened. Public safety did an incredible job

THANK YOU!! Unfortunate that Public Safety (and NYPD) had to deal with entitled student protestors who have no regard for other people or school property. They clearly don't study... which explains their lack of education - and not knowing how the world actually works!
I really want to leave this school because of these things but it’s up to the administrators that keep me around.

As an alum and a parent of a current student I greatly appreciate the incredible professionalism of the Public Security team. The privileged toddlers who stormed into the library to have a tantrum and destroy parts of the library have unfortunately been taught that there will always be someone to clean up their mess, without any real consequence to themselves. Thankfully the Public Safety team was able to contain them without further escalation.
