A school without a library? How is that even a consideration? Isn’t reading one of the fundamental blocks of education?

I have a kindergartener at Tatem and another to join in 2020. I often take my children to the library, as my schedule allows it, but many can’t. I know my library experiences as a child helped foster my love of reading and want that accessibility for every child.

School Librarians teach children how to do the research they need to complete their schoolwork. Please do not take away this vital source of information from these children.

"When every student has the potential to carry a global library on the device in his or her pocket, the role of physical libraries become even more important, not just a place to house resources, but one in which to create meaning from them. The libraries of the 21st century provide a welcoming common space that encourages exploration, creation, and collaboration between students, teachers, and a broader community. They bring together the best of the physical and digital to create learning hubs. Ultimately, libraries will continue to inspire students to construct new knowledge and meaning from the world around them" (Edutopia 2015). School libraries are still vital to a school building. Classroom libraries sometimes are not always adequate for diverse population and your are at the mercy of the classroom teacher's budget. By 6th Grade, there is a drop-off in independent reading don't make it earlier because there is no reading materials.

Losing the librarian is like losing the heart of the school. He/she is there not only to guide readers but also as a valuable resource to the staff, parents, and administration. Valuing the librarian position shows how much you value the education of your students.

Students need school librarians more than ever! School librarians teach digital citizenship, help with students social-emotional growth through the love of literature, and support the entire school community which consists of students, teachers, and parents. It would be a travesty for you to eliminate your school libraries.

School Libraries remain vital to student achievement. Research By Keith Curry Lance has proven that in state after state.

Dear All, I urge you to reconsider your position regarding your libraries- there are many great things that happen there. The beauty of good school libraries is that they have a foundation in tradition and build into the future. I would be more than happy to speak to your board of education and explain in detail why vibrant school libraries are perhaps the best investment a school system can make! How can children learn without the experience of a Library? Reseach from texts rather than Google...

I think much of this could be accomplished at little costs, with volunteers from the community to help staff the libraries.

Physical books ground us to literature in a way that online books cannot. Don’t take books away from students.
