I currently have Coleen for 105 and she clearly puts a lot of effort and care into what she does

There are few instructors in the journalism department at Ball State that have left a lasting impression on me, and Colleen Steffen tops the list. If it weren't for Colleen's classes, her enthusiasm about journalism and her ability to instill others with passion, I would have switched my major as a sophomore. She offered more guidance than anyone else in the department and always went out of her way for me. If the department does not renew her contract it will be worse off because of it.

I never took a standard class with Colleen, yet she still had a huge impact on my education at Ball State. From coaching me and my peers during the summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to making room in her busy schedule to chat with me about an essay I was writing, she encourages her students to be their best selves and do their best work. Her passion for Ball State students shines through everything she does, and the line out her door during office hours should attest to what an amazing resource she is to the department. Ball State is better off because of Colleen Steffen's influence!

Colleen was such an incredible professor throughout my time at Ball State! I stand much more firmly on the design/ 'visual' journalism side, but she made me eager to learn more about the interviewing and reporting side. She always used relatable examples to share with us, and had unique projects to help us practice our skills. It would be a huge mistake to see such a wonderful educator, one that could have this same affect on another student, pass by! This is a wonderful community full of talented journalists, and every student deserves to learn from Colleen.

Colleen is loved by all in the journalism department and she has been such a great mentor to young journalists. CCIM, you HAVE to reconsider.

Colleen is an unbelievable asset not only to the journalism department but to the university as a whole. Without her leadership and warmth towards students, the department will be much worse off. Myself and a number of peers have grown tremendously through her guidance and care, and an oversight to let her go is a big mistake.

Colleen helped me so much throughout my first two years of college. From being there to help with any problem to becoming an advisor and helping a dear friend and I start an on campus club, she is always willing to go the extra mile for her students. She does not deserve this.

Colleen is the reason I decided on the journalism track. I knew I wanted to do it but her class made me realize the passion I had for this field and it’s all because of her and her teaching. Aside from that she’s a wonderful person and is willing to help ANY student. She gives her personal time to help students, teaching is her life. She’s made Ball State her home and this community is better because of her.

Colleen is not only an incredible instructor, but she is overall a wonderful person. Though I only had one class with Colleen, I spent 3 weeks with her in 2016 for the Rio Olympics. She is intelligent, encouraging, loves her students and is passionate about journalism. It'd be a true shame to lose such an impactful instructor.

She is a phenomenal professor and makes genuine connection with her students. I was heartbroken to hear this.

Apart from how influential Colleen is as an instructor, there must be transparency regarding this issue. Ball State journalism students have made a habit of calling out university administrators - and rightfully so - for making decisions that affect students while withholding information. If the journalism department and/or CCIM is doing the same thing that students have openly criticized administrators for, the department/college is just as guilty. It is difficult for me to imagine any just reason not to renew Colleen's contract. She is one of - if not, the most - encouraging, intelligent and kind instructors in the department

Colleen is a huge part of the CCIM journalism department from the connections she makes with students to her work with immersive learning projects like BSU at the Fair. Colleen brings a "just go for it" attitude to the department that is so necessary, especially for journalists. I loved many of the professors I had in the journalism department at BSU, but Colleen is one who truly loves and cares for all of her students (at every level) and goes above and beyond to make people feel welcomed. I can't imagine my journalism degree without Colleen's classes!

Colleen is a wonderful professor and friend to her students. Nothing made me feel more welcomed to the journalism department than a beginning-level class with her. She will be sorely missed at the university.

Colleen taught me to be passionate about what I write. She needs to be here next year to teach that passion to other students.

Colleen has made a huge impact on my life while at Ball State. She not only is an amazing professor, but she is passionate about journalism. When I had some doubts about the journalism industry, storytelling, etc. she was there to talk about it one-on-one. Not everyone makes time for one single student, but she does. I'm saddened and quite ashamed that my university would do something like this. Especially to a professor who did so much for the students.

The department of journalism lost the best professor it has by not renewing Colleen's contract. She has a passion for teaching and journalism that can't be beat, and she transfers that passion to her students. I would not be the journalist I was today if it wasn't for Colleen.

She's one of the best teachers at the university. Ican say with confidence I have learned the most from here. We traveled to Italy together for study abroad and she supported everu student along th way. Ball State won't be the same without her.

Professor Steffen is by far the best journalism teacher I've had. I can honestly say that without Colleen I wouldn't be the journalist I am today. If she is truly fired, you will lose one of the best teachers here and it will be quite disheartening.
