Thank you to the 166 individuals who supported this effort to ensure equitable service for all residents. We will monitor the implementation process to ensure these changes are enacted fairly.

This was passed in 1984 with the purpose to prevent overlapping availability of electric service in any one area in the state of Alabama. This was in connection to economic, financial and environmental impacts. In 1984, the goal was simply to avoid duplication and avoid wasted and degradation of the environment. However, the City of Dothan has greatly changed and territories now occupied by Wiregrass Electric Co-OP are within the City limits. This means that residents in these areas are forced to use the Co-Op at a higher price. Dothan utilities is managed by the City with City taxes but these citizens are not able to access Dothan Utilities. The cost difference as of July 2015 is substantial for families in the city under the Co-OP.
This petition is for those who would like to amend the code so that the City of Dothan can offer all city utilities to all of its citizens through the changing of territory lines.

The feedback I have received regarding the disparity in utility costs highlights a significant concern for many Dothan residents. I am currently researching the appropriate legislative channels to address this code amendment. Further updates will be provided as I finalize the documentation for our representatives.

If you guys want to know what really happens with the money made from the higher Co-Op prices look no further than what happened in Greenville, AL with Pioneer Electric Co-op and owner Malloy Chandler. Co-ops are supposed to redistribute any profits back to the people under which the Co-op serves, hence the name Cooperative. But Pioneer Electric cooked the books and made upper management very wealthy.
Does the Dothan 101 class tell you that a the difference is around $75 per month for an average 1500 kWh house this summer. $75 that each city resident looses forming being on witegrass electric... And who pays there bill in person anyway? For the record I don't think a lawsuit is necessary. An amended law passed by Al leadership.
Paying two companies is ridiculous. I pay Co-op for electricity and Dothan for water. My bills (combined) are ridiculous in comparison to others with the same circumstances using Dothan Utilities. If given a choice, some may choose Co-op, but at least give us an option.
It is a hassle to pay Wiregrass Electric for electricity and Dothan Utilities for water/sewage! That is how we are over charged...easily $300.00 each month!!!
We had City of Dothan Utilities for 25 years. We have had Wiregrass Electric for 11 years. Never have we paid such high electricity bills as we do with Wiregrass Electric Coop. Since we live within the City of Dothan limits, we should have a choice between the two companies.
Our Bill has doubled in the last couple of months. Just like every one on Wiregrass Electric.
The Highlands should be under Dothan Utilities let's make this happen!

I would love an option. It is horrible to have Wiregrass Electric, when my neighbor across the street has Dothan Utilities AND I live behind 2 Dothan City Schools.
