To the Clinton County Board of Commissioners:
As citizens of Clinton County concerned about the effects of climate change, we request that you publicly recognize the existence of the climate crisis and devise plans, with deadlines, for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of our local government and all public structures and operations. Further, we ask that you lead the way through collaboration with other agencies and leaders, providing incentives, and inviting public comment and contributions in helping the wider community conserve energy, increase efficiency, and support renewable energy sources.

The Board of Commissioners has not responded to our proposals yet, so we need to turn up the pressure. Look up your district representative and call their office today to ask why they are ignoring these climate goals. Post the link to this petition on your Facebook page to make sure our neighbors see that we are not going away.

We hit our first major milestone and the momentum is building faster than we expected. Call your commissioner this morning to make sure they see this surge of public interest.

Elected state and local officials should serve as leaders in the efforts to protect citizens from the dire consequences of climate change. We know that we must drastically shrink our carbon emissions. Please apply your leadership to encourage businesses and citizens to become more aware of the actions we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint. We may all feel that our small contributions won't amount to much but multiplying those individual efforts by thousands and millions can make a big difference.
Our farmers depend upon a stable and predictable climate in order to grow our food and earn their livelihood, and we look to our farmers for our sustenance. Our future depends upon our ability to stop global climate change. If we are to save our future we must be forward thinkers and address this problem now!
We are already seeing the costs of the increasing frequency and severity of extreme and variable weather in unpredictable agricultural production and deadly wildfires and storms. If we choose to do nothing now, we will burden our children and some of the most vulnerable people in the world with much higher costs in the future. I believe it is imperative that government at all levels, the private sector, and individuals act now to do all that we can to minimize climate change.
I would be so proud to have a Clinton County announcing support for climate change action. Its our time, our responsibility to do what we can to prevent weather disasters.
I believe the county should establish a committee or work group (with citizen participation) to help create a climate action plan.
Please also identify measures already accomplished !
The vast majority of climate scientists agree: anthropogenic climate change (global warming) is occurring due to human activity, is accelerating faster than previously predicted, and is already wreaking havoc on the world. Whether it be from lengthening or shortening seasons, flooding, extreme weather events, or draught, the facts are clear. We are entering a time of change and upheaval due to a climate that is rapidly changing. The economic, humanitarian, and political costs will be staggering as we move closer to the year 2100. It is vital we act to reduce green house gas emissions, adopt regulatory schemes to reduce Michigan's carbon footprint, and work as hard as possible to preserve Michigan's diverse ecosystem and beautiful natural resources for future generations.

Taking care of our environment is a challenge for all communities, but it is necessary and now is the time to begin if we haven't already. A healthy environment means a healthy Clinton County.
