We are petitioning the Johnston County Board of Commissioners regarding the Johnston County Animal Shelter. This shelter has not worked with volunteers in over a year and the animals are the ones that suffer the most for this. We have been trying to work with the Director and the County Manager for over 10 months to develop a volunteer program -and we have dealt with delays after delays. We are asking the Board to step up and understand that this shelter needs volunteers and that Johnston County cares about their homeless animals. Volunteers make a big difference in a shelter-they help improve conditions, reduce costs and increase adoption rates.

We are also asking the Board to stop the practice of euthanasia by gas chamber (instead they can use the lethal injection) as most NC shelters have already discontinued gas chambers and use lethal injections. This is a inhumane, outdated procedure that actually costs more to do that the injections. There is No reason to continue the gas chamber.  Most animals euthanizied this way suffer a long traumatic death.

If you are able to show your support, we gratefully appreciate it. You may email the Johnston County Board of Commissioners at:

We need your help. Please show your support by signing this petition. We will present this petition to the Johnston County Board of Commissioners to show Johnston County Community cares about our homeless animals. Thank you so much for your support.

The level of public interest in this cause has grown far beyond my initial expectations. This momentum indicates a clear consensus that the current policies at our local shelter are no longer acceptable. I am grateful for your continued dedication to these animals.

The poor dogs are just sitting in cages all day. Let the community help them get exercised and find homes already.

Unbelievable that they wont even let volunteers in. My heart breaks for these animals.

Do the right thing and switch to injections. Its cleaner and way more humane for the animals.
