Save our beautiful city from an horrendous northern bypass

A northern bypass would have disastrous effects on the beautiful cathedral city of Chichester by isolating it even further from the surrounding countryside. It is well-known that building new through roads increases the volume of traffic. Improving the existing A27 bypass will cause far less damage to the environment.

Losing a historic race track would be criminal! The Goodwood revival brings loads of visitors and trade to the local area.
Surely there must be a better solution.

Chichester's natural surroundings are of immense value to the city, its visitors and its residents. Carving them up irreparably damages all parties concerned as well as the wildlife and scenery that makes Sussex the wonderful place it is to live. I urge policy makers to drop this proposal and instead concentrate on improving the efficiency of the existing network, especially the A27 itself.

Introduce flyovers on the A27 at intersection with local roads.
At peak times it can take a long time to get on or over the A27 from Selsey Bosham etc.

We believe that there should be proper consultation before improvements to the A27 are put in place. It is difficult to see what route a northern bypass could take without causing considerable damage to the local environment and economy.

Chichester will become a confined, polluted traffic island, totally congested with the loss of an outstandingly beautiful landscape and many amenities which underpin our economy and make Chichester the special place it is today for residents and tourists from the UK and abroad.

The area around the South Downs should be protected and not encroached upon or it will ruin the unique and rural environment which the South Downs National Park was set up to protect. A northern route is very short sighted.
