Common sense dictates the improvement and upgrading of the existing A27, including better links to the villages to the south, rather than desecrating and destroying the countryside to the north. Surely it is our responsibility to protect this area for future generations.

The destruction of our landscape by driving a new road North of Chichester instead of using the existing A27 by making over/under passes is piece of vandalism that makes a mockery of civilized ideas.

A co-ordinated solution is needed to improve the whole route from Lyons Farm, Worthing to Havant. We must preserve our precious countryside and upgrading the existing route should be properly considered. Tinkering with one small section with this knee-jerk reaction of a proposal is not the right way forward.

A northern route would do nothing to relieve the problem in the long run. Investing in the existing A27 and completing the link around Arundel and Worthing to create a true South Coast highway is what is needed.

I encourage you to press for an upgrade of the existing A27 rather than spend a lot more money destroying the countryside with a brand new bypass.

In 1974, the Northern bypass was investigated as an alternative by the then Department of the Environment. After Public Consultation, it was rejected in favour of the current South route. Since then, the South route has been neglected and starved of the investment needed to upgraded it to carry the current volume of traffic.

The focus should be on improving the existing A27 situation and improving the peninsula access to Chichester from the Witterings, Selsey & Bognor. Not destroying the stunning countryside to the north!

It should be perfectly possible to improve the current A27, with the use of flyovers for example. It was quite possible to enlarge the M25 while traffic continued, surely it is just as possible to enlarge the A27 in a similar way.

This is shortsighted and would be an appalling waste of valuable funds that could be much better spent on improving existing highways, railways and ensuring proper maintenance of our country roads, hedges and ditches as we used to. A northern highway will add no value whatsoever, other than for the mindless who want to get from A to B but care nothing for nature in between
