It is clear that improving the existing by pass is viable and cost effective. A Northern by pass will remove a large tract of valuable countryside for ever and encourage expansion of the city to the north.

It is obvious that upgrading the junctions of the existing road will improve traffic flow for both local and through traffic. The northern bypass will not and will destroy a large swathe of unspoilt countryside.

NO WAY should the Northern route be implemented. It would place Chichester in an isolated postion beween major trunk roads for one thing. Also by cutting through the Goodwood estate it would destroy the very popular Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed events which bring thousands of pounds into the local economy. Likewise the Goodwood Airfield and race track is a very busy facility and always draws in lots of visitors for various events, Access to the airfield would be compromised if this northern route were to go ahead. The South Downs is a protected area and a major highway through it would prove devastating to the local wildlife. There is absolutely NO REASON to consider this option.

Really need to get a strategic solution to the A27 planning in not just road but commercial and residential land, not push the problem north and into the beautiful countryside

I wrote to Andrew Tyrie on 5th December when first I heard about the proposals. He has so far declined to answer. I thought that he would get involved straight away as he has previously gone on record supporting work on the existing road rather than effort be diverted onto a Northern bypass. I hope that he will soon show support for this campaign.

this bypass is a badly thought through idea a lot of the traffic that builds up around the A27 is from locals and people visiting the Witterings so it wouldn't help anyway

Chichester us a uniquely beautiful city because of its fabulous countryside. That particular swathe of country in question would permanently be damaged, both visually and in noise pollution. The north bypass would sever our countryside from the city and change the whole character of a very very special city.

I believe that a new Northern by-pass route will do a lot more damage to both to the outstandingly beautiful countryside, the SDNP and the local economy than upgrading the existing by pass. This must not be steamrollered through without full local consultation.

I'm surprised this plan is being considered, it will cut Lavant off from Chichester, destroy many areas of beautiful countryside, presumably have an adverse effect on motorsports at goodwood (and the benefits this brings) and all right on the edge of a national park. A much better solution is to upgrade the existing route.
