As a sometime user of the A27 round Chichester I think a lot of upgrading could be done to improve traffic flow. However a Northern bypass would do too much damage to the local countryside and environment.

We are opposed to a northern bypass. Leave our "green and pleasant land" to the sheep and cattle that graze it alone! To build it northwards will create more problems than it will solve. A flyover would bring less decimation.

having worked and lived in Emsworth, Chichester and Pulborough over many years, and enjoyed the countryside, I feel that building this by-pass will decimate the area. If built will the existing A27 be returned to countryside ?

Please do not approve a northern bypass for Chichester which will ruin the local areas so precious to us Cicestrians

The National Park boundary should extend to the edge of the city itself, as originally intended. The dark shadow behind the scenes of the Northern bypass fiasco is the prospect of building 1600 plus homes west of the city. Fighting the bypass alone whilst ignoring the enormous and inevitable increase in population and traffic in this area, if these homes are allowed to be built, is like fighting a boxing match with one hand.
The danger is that in a few years, once all these new homes have been built on greenfield sights (prime farmland, and crucial flood plains- yes, Chichester would be next on the news underwater!), then the Northern bypass could be forced upon us through the back door, saying ‘you see we HAVE to build it now!’
The immediate solution is to improve the A27. An underpass would be the most preferable (not impossible even though the water table is high). Failing that, the option of a flyover.

At 20.30 last night I stood in my garden and heard the sounds of the countryside. Ducks quacking in the River Lavant, a cow mooing, the squawk of a pheasant and an owl hooting. I wouldn't have heard this if a Northern Route goes ahead.

I hope no dodgy underhand deal being negotiated between Goodwood Estate and WSCC on a ' no objection to a bypass by Goodwood Estate in return for planning permission being granted for a rumoured 150 houses on Goodwood Estate land at Halnaker '. Also - following the Shoreham Airshow disaster on A27 , presumably no more air displays at Goodwood events should the north bypass be implemented.

The surroundings around the existing road already have been developed over time in response to a busy road. A completely new road would just ruin a large area of unspoilt countryside. The existing road could be used as a base route from which to build a good new road with slip road exists and fly overs to prevent congestion and allow for smooth traffic without loosing access points. Get rid of all those round abouts!

I believe the South Downs should be protected & feel the new road is unnecessary - far better to improve the flow of traffic on the existing roads.

A northern by-pass through the South Downs and Goodwood Estate is ludicrous. Must be better to improve existing and make fit for purpose.

I stand with my constituents in Chichester and the surrounding areas in opposing the northern by-pass of the A27. The Highways England options Four and Five in the current draft plans would have a devastating impact on the countryside to the north of Chichester and the South Downs National Park.
Along with Chichester Green Party Councillor Sarah Sharp I urge Highways England and West Sussex County Council to prioritise sustainable travel, including improved train travel, and the safety of local residents. With hundreds of millions of pounds being earmarked to spend on improvements to the A27 along Worthing, Arundel and Chichester the challenge to create more safe cycling and walking routes, and make train travel more affordable, must become a priority.
