The original bypass obviously takes the best route. All it needs is improved junctions. The route to the north would be hugely damaging to the character of the city, strangling it in dual carriageway. It would also irrevocably ruin the charming approach to the city from the north.

The northern route would be hugely detrimental to the character of the City itself, strangling it in dual carriageway and traffic whilst irrevocably damaging to the charming approach from the north.

We need to preserve the beautiful South Downs countryside. The traffic in the city needs better planning with 'cut through' roundabouts like in Oxford.

A Northern route will cause unnecessary environmental damage and provide only a partial and short-term fix to the existing problems.
Upgrading the current junctions on the Southern route works for both local and through traffic while creating no additional nuisance.

It is the local traffic that is the problem around Chichester that clogs the existing bypass, especially the railway level crossings at the railway station..
