Chichester Deserves Better

One of the routes I see The Highways Agency is considering is a northern by-pass around Chichester. This will not help solve the traffic jams along the A27 from local people such as ourselves and our customers going in and out of Chichester from the Manhood peninsular or coming to Chichester from Arundel. Please do not consider a northern by-pass, simply improve the major intersections and round-abouts around Chichester on the A27. Check out the very heavy traffic flows along the roads south from Chichester, the A286, the A259 and the B2145. The junctions are clogged up perpetually and the roads themselves busy from both directions very often. My guess would be that the vast majority of traffic crossing the 3 major roundabouts south of Chichester, either horizontally or vertically over a year, are from :- • Local residents engaged in school and college runs, shopping and work • Holiday makers and those coming into the City and the coastal area for leisure and cultural pursuits None of these will be helped by wasting money on another by-pass north of the City, as they have no reason to go there ! If you think improving the A27 for through traffic is a bigger issue than I do, then go for a modification of the A27 as you have proposed on the south east side, simultaneously with improving the round-abouts. Whatever you decide for Chichester is far less needed or urgent than sorting out the A27 at Arundel in any event . Until you have done so and built it please don’t mess Chichester up with a northern route as it will not help anything ! My suggested solution. At the biggest round-abouts, dismantle them and form new continuous dual carriage ways straight through where the round-about was, both ways, whilst building a new single filter lanes for 200 mts either side to allow on and off traffic, with the filter lane splitting off left and a continuation of it leading to an underpass right under the A27 to go north or south from each direction.

Please support a series of upgrades and improvements to the existing route.

traffic to the coast seems to be increasing all the time. gone are the days of a quite walk at Wittering beach in the winter...it is thousands of visitors a day in the summer. These. are the roads that should be improved.The north is generally Ok. Goodwood events are controlled am/pm.on the days. I don't think a Northern bypass is going to make a difference.to daily traffic. .The South Downs Way took so long to achieve..Putting a bypass near seems quite dotty to me. I don't think this has been well thought out at all.!!!

Improvements to the A27 will have to be made anyway to prevent the further isolation of the Manhood Peninsular

the A27 needs upgrading -which would benefit ALL users. The North route would be a temp-orary COSTLY sticking plaster

why can't we stick to one plan and get on with it? IMHO the biggest improvement to local traffic would be a flyover on the Bognor road. On my daily commute to Portsmouth that is the biggest delay either direction. Both Arundel and Worthing present more significant problems for through traffic

Upgrading of existing road by far the most sensible option .e

Upgrading the existing roundabouts will not only help through traffic but also deal with the major traffic flow from Bognor and the Manhood peninsular.

There is no justification to create a new route north of Chichester. The existing route has ample space beside it to be upgraded. Installing yet more Tarmac will also increase flood risks from increased run off where it would have soaked in before. A northern bypass will not directly benefit residents south of the town purely the passing traffic east/west.

Chichester certainly does deserve better than this poorly thought out northern. Bypass which will cutup and destroy the country side and villages around it.surely it must be better to upgrade the existing A27 even if it disruptive and .more expensive. We are so close to The South Downs National park that it can not.make any common sense to build a bypass on the North side.Chichester beautiful ancient city will then be just sandwiched between 2 busy roads. I don t call that sensible town planning more like town ruining.Please think loñg term even if it costs more and is disruptive. Upgrade the A27 use flyovers much better than spoiling yet more of England's green and pleasant lands.

Surely the best and cheapest solution would be to upgrade the existing A27.

The north route makes no sense and should be dropped and replaced by improvement of the existing A27 Chichester bypass with fly-overs etc

I strongly oppose the construction of a Northern BY-Pass for the A27!

What a ridiculous proposal. A flawed, short-term fix to a much wider problem at the expense of people, communities and the natural environment. I pity the fool that came up with this idea.

It is a ludicrous idea that would ruin a beautiful part of the country. Living on the Manhood Peninisula I know that this will not alleviate the traffic problem one little bit! Why can't a tunnel be made under the current bypass? That way there would be no further destruction of our beautiful countryside and heritage. It would also mean that those passing through will be able to use the tunnel and those turning off locally can use the current bypass. The same should be done for Arundel too. Even though it costs more it is worth it in the long run and I am certain would achieve more support rather than the type of opposition that is apparent for this preposterous idea!

As a regular user of the by pass this will NOT solve the problem. Had the by pass been better planned and constructed it would not be doing its job and taking traffic past Chichester.

If money was not an issue then a tunnel would be the answer. However the Northern option would spoil the unique south downs area & our great city forever. The expansion of the existing route surely would be the better option for all.
