I couldn’t agree more. 22nd street between 6th and 7th has become a very unpleasant block filled with random market of stolen items, human waste of all sorts along with angry addicts. It has to change.

On 22nd Street, the homeless (or faux-homeless) are entrenched and essentially own the block. They block the sidewalk and are belligerent towards pedestrians and leave their detritus and garbage everywhere.

I've lived in the neighborhood for decades and never seen it this unsanitary and unsafe. Homeless encampments with refuse spilling into the street. Peddling. Fights with and screaming at real and imaginary people in the middle of busy sidewalks. I hate to blame it on one person but I've noticed this issue grow once DeBlasio took office.

Karin Magnuson, please get your geography and facts straight! I am a resident of the Chelsea Hotel since 1989, and walk my dog at least four times a day. There have NEVER been “...dogs that live with the homeless people on the south side of 23rd Street in front of the Chelsea Hotel...” There is one homeless ‘resident’, who has been camped out there for 3 years without a dog. The Chelsea Hotel owner insisted that he leave, so he slid over to the Synagogue. He prides himself on keeping other homeless people away. There is enough hysteria and real problems without creating more by writing ‘fake news’.

This is not a problem confined to our neighborhood but something does need to be done to help these people get off the streets. It has steadily become more of a problem over the past year.

Scaffolding, garbage, homelessness has exploded not just in Chelsea but ALL of nyc. Neighbors of Chelsea sign this petition and let’s get the mayor’s attention where it belongs.

My wife and I moved to Chelsea/New York from San Francisco two years ago and one of the main reasons is because of the horrible homeless issue there. Human waste, hypodermic needles, graffiti, trash fill the streets and the homeless wandering the city are aggressive and dangerous. There wasn’t an issue in Chelsea when we moved here two years ago but it has quickly spiraled out of control and has become very worrisome. The scaffolding all over the neighborhood only exacerbates the problem. And worse, our worthless Mayor doesn’t seem to be doing anything to remedy the situation.
Please New Yorkers in Chelsea - don’t sit by and let this great neighborhood and city become another San Francisco. Take action NOW!

Public urination and unsanitary conditions are rampant in the high teens and low 20s near 6th Avenue during overnight hours. Especially on weekends.

Presence of Homeless and drug addicted individuals has skyrocketed in Chelsea. Even more troubling is they often loiter in groups of 4-8 people. I live in Penn South, and the problem is readily apparent every single day.

We deal every day with the homeless and vagrants using our buildings as toilets. I have lived in the West Village for 33 years and have never had this situation before! We need to clean this up.

The homeless and the addicted need help, and the residents need protection. There needs to be balance, but the increase in people on the streets has tipped that balance.

This situation has become a pandemic, with no end in sight. The problem exists on several levels: there are the truly homeless, the drug addicts, the beggars, and the mentally ill. There needs to be some sort of task force that distinguishes among these people and is able to properly assign them to designated places. It's a very big job, and should be started now by the City Council.

To bring more clarity, this isn't about "homeless families". This is about seriously drug addicted and mentally disturbed people wandering around and living in our streets --- with the result being violence and unsanitary streets way too often. The notion that a person like Andy does not feel safe asking his wife or children to walk their dog says everything. A few suggestions to help correct the problem.
1. Homeless outreach services need to be patrolling our streets EVERY DAY trying to convince these people to go in for services. we are paying for this with our taxes! (i've never seen one outreach in progress).
2. A highly visible and constant police presence needs to be out walking our streets every day - patrolling is a deterrent.
3. All construction sites with scaffolding needs to be brightly lit -- and all scaffolding in the neighborhood must be patrolled regularly to deter encampments.
4. Our subway stations need constant patrolling as well -- the #1 line at 14th, 18th, 23rd in particular.
5. As resident taxpayers it is our job to demand these actions from our precincts and local government officials and to report all homeless needs to 311 asking for homeless services outreach.
I am optimistic we can fix this before it is way more out of control than it already is -- we are not helpless. The neighborhoods where we live, work and play belong to us, the people in dire straights out there on the streets need HELP and CARE, the violent offenders and criminals need to be arrested and we all need to work together with our precincts and homeless services to get this moving in a different direction. The resources I mention above BELONG TO US !!! WE PAID FOR THEM --- Let's get them deployed on our behalf!
