NYC Officials:

There is an alarming increase in the number of homeless, drug addicted and vagrants living in the streets of Chelsea and the West Village. We want this problem fixed and we want it fixed now.

It is a dangerous and unsanitary situation for those on the streets and the people who live in the neighborhood. We deserve to live in a safe and clean environment. There are so many families with children who live here. There are people who are now afraid to walk their dogs and some of our subway stations have turned into homeless encampments.

We are asking Speaker Corey Johnson and Mayor DeBlasio to support our community precinct police officers to help us resolve this increasingly dangerous situation on our streets. They require your support to be able to do their jobs and as a community we are here to tell you we want them to clean up our streets and get these people off of them so that they can get the help they need and we can return to our streets being safe and clean. DO YOUR JOBS AND TAKE ACTION NOW!

I found this at an appropriate time given that I came home from a weekend away to find a porta potty has been installed on the corner of 18th and 8th, where I frequently have to walk a block out of my way to feel safe going home.

The homeless, mentally ill and addict problem is worse now than I have ever see it in 22 years of living in Greenwich Village. Almost daily there is an issue on our block and every street has someone passed out, panhandling or ranting. It is dystopian.

The increase in the number of homeless people on 8th avenue in Chelsea is absolutely shocking! What happened? Why the sudden influx. I use an app called Citizen and EVERY DAY there are multiple assaults on 8th from 14th to 23rd. Put an end to it!

I do not feel safe asking my wife or children to walk our dog in Chelsea on 23rd St, as there are numerous people who need help, but are left to fend for themselves on the street. They need help, as they are endangering themselves and potentially others.

I live in the west village and the homeless issue is out of control. I am scared to leave my apt and my dogs have been threatened and physically assaulted. I’ve called 311 and 911 many times regarding this issue and nothing has been done. This needs to be addressed!

The scaffolding in the Chelsea area has increased the homeless population considerably and Chelsea is no longer the quaint area it was just a year ago. It feels unsafe due to the dark space created by scaffolding and the mental instability of many homeless.

Help the mentally-ill and substance abusers roaming the Chelsea streets get the help they need. We need our streets safe and clean — for EVERYONE.

Is homeless person came up to me asking for money and when I said I had none— she took out of a golf club and told me to run.
