This petition is to encourage Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee and his councilors to commit to legislate a Ban on plastic bottles and plastic shopping bags by the end of 2016. Every year 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags and plastic bottles end up in our landfills or oceans. This is equivalent to 60 million barrels of oil by dumped into our environment.
Let's follow the example that progressive cities such as San Francisco and Mexico City are setting by banning plastic bottles and plastic bags.
Please sign this petition to let our leaders know that we are all champions of change and we want to preserve and protect our environment.

I have been meeting with local business owners to discuss the transition away from single-use plastics. Send an email to the Mayor today to remind him that our community wants these bags and bottles gone for good. Copy your local councilor on that message so they know this is a priority for their constituents.

Reusable bags are more comfortable to hold and drinks from glass bottles taste much better... Where is the loss? (and better yet, get your own water bottle and a Brita filter!!)
It is a shame that plastic bottles were ever allowed onto PEI. Let's get them and the plastic shopping bags off the Island.
The evidence is there. The time it takes to decompose plastic is ridiculous. Most plastic is literally made for packaging, with the purpose to throw it away. We need to come up with different materials to be used, before the earth and everything else it holds suffer because of humanities CHOSEN BLINDNESS. We know the Earth's climate is changing, and the changes that have been made to prevent this haven't been enough. Aren't we supposed to be the smartest species here? We need to take responsibility for our actions!!
There is far too much plastic around, if not ban it, at the very least make it from hemp so that it is biodegradable ...
maybe we can get it done. tired of seeing these things on the beach and side of road

Once upon a time we did without both. At minimum we can ban plastic shopping bags and go back to paper with the reusable fabric bag option. In fact charge us for each paper bag as well to encourage reusable fabric bags.
