What you say is correct Alan, and I completely agree a school needs a robust discipline procedure. THS is a better school now than it was 2 years ago, due to this very harsh punishment regime. But other punishments are available that do not include withdrawing teaching time and depriving children of hot meals and intervention work (where required). Government guidelines say seclusion can be used where a pupil is being disruptive in class. Taking a child out of the classroom and away from teaching time for an entire day is not a suitable or proportionate punishment for breaking your pen, doodling in your journal or wearing the wrong socks.

a child is placed in seclusion for incorrect provisions such as a green pen.where are the school provisions that allow that child a hot meal or basic need such as being allowed to wear a coat in school at the height of winter.

Petty reasons for many exclusions wrong shoes, socks, no calculators, pens etc - petty minded schools are abusing children's rights to meals, breaks, education. Actually those children have no contract with the school - SCHOOLS NEED TO STOP ABUSING PUPILS RIGHTS TO AN EDUCATION and BREAKS

Disgusting. I attended this school between 1996 and 2003 and NEVER thought I would hear of such atrocity. The SMT and Governors ought to be ashamed of themselves.

seclution is barbaric inprisonment and mentle torture to induce fear in pupils ialways found highschools find it it easier to control pupils if they are not independent free thinkers isolation is there to squash childrens souls and create servants with an unquestioning mind

No child should go without a hot dinner especially in winter it is against their human rights and it is illegal if parents or the government have paid for the meal this in my eyes constitutes stealing ie taking money and not supplying what the money was intended for

But the constraints that are in place that limit your choices to express yourself can also be the vehicle for creativity. Think of hese restrictions as an opportunity to be creative, to express yourself within tight boundaries. See this article and there is many more.http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.centerforimagination.org%2F2014%2F01%2Fthinking-inside-the-box-how-constraint-can-boost-creativity%2F&h=xAQHhFufg

We had the cane when I was at THS, hardly ever used, but it seemed a deterrent at the time. Rather than getting upset at this punishment, we need to hear from people at the school to find out how effective this punishment is. Cruel and unusual punishment is the concern of Article 3 of the European convention of human rights. Maybe denying food and withdrawing education falls within this article.

My daughter doesn't go to high school yet but when she does I would like her needs to be met in the best possible way for the six hours a day she will be there. This approach is very concerning and I would question whether there are any positive effects on the children and young people experiencing being treated in this way!
