There is no reason that the dress score can’t be changed. It is a lot easier to practice in spandex.

With volleyball being a a sport that requires you to end up in many different positions stretching out, jumping and falling for balls wearing spandex provides a comfortable and suitable way to do that without being exposed. As a school spandex should not be looked at as inappropriate when it is only wore during games and practice times. Spandex allow for good flexibility and it also protects the girls from being exposed especially if you plan on going to some type of shorts. There is nothing for the sport of volleyball that will ensure that the girls are not exposed when they are diving for balls or doing rolls that where they may end up in awkward positions. I hope as a school that you look at all the factors and really determine the reason you choose to identify this one sport and their uniform as inappropriate. There are many different types of spandex so please consider that before deciding on uniforms for a game in which you do not play.

You will have more uniform mishaps with shorts. When they dive, the shorts will ride up and show more than spanks. Girls that are uncomfortable can wear shorts.

Yet again another prime example of how sexist Gorman is and how they see their female students. Spandex is essential for certain sports and for the safety and comfort of players, banning spandex will make this school look more of a joke than it already is.

The fact that this rule is being put into place is ridiculous. Why is it that workout clothes for women and girls are sexualized, but the boys can run around in tight shirts/work out shorts and no one bats an eye. As a Gorman alum, I am so disappointed in the school for this. This does not protect young women, it teaches them that they are only viewed as sexual objects and must be hidden away. In my time there we would be forced to kneel on the linoleum in the cafeteria in lines to check that our skirts hit the backs of our calves, and teachers would police the hallways with rulers to come up to us and place them against our legs to see how short our skirts were. When will they learn that these rules and this behavior doesn’t “keep girls from being distracting” but rather detracts from young women’s education by using penal authority to force us to worry about our bodies rather than our academics.

This is a safety issue for these cheerleaders. Wind shorts will not be sufficient for stunting. They are too baggy and too slick. It poses an issue for the flyer who may be dropped or caught only by the clothing and for the bases who can injure fingers, wrists or worse when dealing with extra fabric.

Spandex is the most optimal attire for volleyball and underneath cheerleading uniforms. If you look around the country, 99% of volleyball teams at the high school level or above wear spandex. Why would they do this? Because it is the most optimal attire for volleyball. The tight material is not formatted to “gain attention from other people”, it is so players can jump, slide, run, and do all movements quickly and effectively on the court to perform well during practices and games. Along with this, cheerleading NEEDS spandex for underneath uniforms. Jumping, cheering, stunting, and tumbling are all activities that can make your skirt go up at anytime. To keep this appropriate and safe, we wear coordinated spandex to help with the safety and protection of each cheerleader while they practice and cheer on all sports teams. As a former cheerleader and volleyball player at Gorman, this new dress code is ridiculous and will only hurt the Gorman sports teams by discouraging players to play and practice their sports at the optimal level without spandex. If the reason for this petition is purely out of the intention that boys or other people will be distracted, please educate yourself and others before blaming this attention on the spandex, which provides optimal performance for these athletes.

Spandex are literally a part of the uniform for sports such as cheerleading and volleyball. They are used for the safety of the athletes so that loose clothing does not get caught when they are participating in different activities, such as stunting in cheerleading.
