The Dress Code has changed!

we should totally be able to wear spandex, it’s easier to move in and it covers us. this is our body and we should be able to choose how we dress.

I believe it should be changed because as someone who goes to a fine arts school we need spandex so we can dance and preform other extra Curricular Activities for efficiently!

As a valid safety concern for sporting teams I agree with the girls. As a former student of Bishop Gorman I would rather my female peers be able to do sports they love without unnecessary risk of injury. Would you send a football player onto the field in flip flops? If you want to maintain a high level of decency from both the boys and girls at Gorman, teach more on Theology of the Body and teach it through multiple years of Theology class because views & importance changes with age. Telling girls to just cover more masks the problem yes, but it doesn’t fight it at the source. You can maintain morals & safety at the same time.

Every day is an opportunity to empower and support young women and people who attend Gorman. Rules and policies as such degrade people to their bodies, objectifying them beyond what they probably already get by just being women. All bodies are beautiful— this schools “value” modesty perpetuates shame and distrust of our bodies. Gorman should be looking at how each and every policy can uphold the dignity of each person, and let me tell you, the conversations need to start with the people who are worried about the tight shorts in the first place. What if instead of these policies that police the bodies of young women, Gorman make some commitments to anti-racism work? To cultural competency work? To being a safe space for queer youths? The list goes on.

My son's friend, an alumnus of this school, alerted me to it's retrograde policies that seem to date from another century. Sexist & misgynistic.

I am a Bishop Gorman Alum. Change needs to happen. Please stop treating women poorly!!

Sounds like the double standard set forth at Bishop Gorman has gotten worse with the new administration as they continue to push away students just as the school was getting better before Mr. Franz left (class of 2016)

I haven't seen any new rule, but I agree the girls should not be walking around with skin-tight shorts without a skirt or other shorts. Spanx are perfectly appropriate under cheer skirts, because they enhance modesty. If they are worn as underwear, it's no one's business. Surely we aren't going to require them to remove a layer of clothing in the name of modesty. It's also important that parents have been required to buy Spanx as a part of the uniform. My understanding is that they enhance safety by reducing the chance of snagging or catching and injuring fingers. Compression garments are also supposed to provide support and prevent injuries. For comparison, look at the swim or wrestling team uniforms. Their uniforms are streamlined for valid reasons. During closed practices, we should trust the coach to manage things.

Its not fair that we don’t get to wear what we want just because the boys stare. Its not the girls that need to control what they wear, its the boys that need to control what they do.
