Many people claim NBF as their "heritage" and their history. They use this as justification to maintain honors that were given to him many years after his death. As an actual descendant of his I feel that my voice hold much more sway in this regard, and I say change the name. He is a blight on my family's history and the history of this country. We do need to acknowledge the fact that our country has been sick with the infection of racism for so long that we are still honoring a dealer in enslaved people. Yet, maintaining a building in his name is not, by any stretch, the way to do that. The Forrests are still a military family, I'm a veteran myself, and the idea of having an ROTC building named after the only member of my family to have committed war crimes makes me sick. I hope my voice gives pause to anyone claiming the "heritage" argument, and bolsters in my small way, those fighting for this change.

I just had a curiosity today about MTSU's history concerning racism and found out about its toxic relationship with this man, a symbol of slavery and murder. It disgusts me and I sincerely hope that President McPhee will finally squash the remnants of it before he completes his tenure.

In 1996 we attempted to change the name of a building named after on of the original founders of the KKK. We also wanted the original mascot changed. Since that time, the number of African Americans enrolled in MTSU had increased tremendously. We, the Alumni support this movement. It is time for a change. The resistance of chanding the me shows a disrespect to the students. The ROTC program is made up of various races. Why is their building still dedicated to a person who enforced hatred?

Change it to Dr. Powell's Hall.!!
He was a veteran, a wonderful professor and officer. Hits legacy must live on, as many of his alumni students love and Revere him even sill. His passing was truly unexpected. As an former MTSU Professor we owe him that much.

Regardless of any "historical importance," maintaining this name is, honestly, maintaining support of a man and era that fully believed in white supremacy.

This is aweful and goes against the university's goals for inclusion
Its time to change the name. Why are we making memorials for the side that lost. Holding on to this history does nothing but perpetuate the same idea they had all those years ago. Next is getting his bustle out of the capitol.

Nathan Bedford Forrest is a disgusting historical figure in American history and MTSU should recognize this and NOT celebrate it. MTSU should change the name of Forrest Hall because it is a public university, where many of it students represent the demographic Forrest vowed to eliminate from Tennessee.

This is a public university. All students should feel safe and welcome. By refusing to change the name of Forrest Hall, you are saying that some student's feelings and sense of wellbeing are not as important. In particular, you are saying that black students don't matter. This is absolutely outrageous. #blackstudentsmatter #blacklivesmatter If continue to refuse to change the name, you will be remembered as those who stood in the way of justice. It's not a pretty side of history to be on.

As a two time graduate of MTSU I'm proud to see MTSU students stand Together to affect positive change on campus. Symbols of hate and white supremacy have no place on a college campus, or anywhere else for that matter. CHANGE THE DAMN NAME!
