Robert Burns was a Scotsman whose name is renowned the world over as a consummate poet. He never regarded himself as anything but Scottish, and even wrote about the Treaty of Union with England, describing the Scottish nobility as "Sic a parcel o' rogues in a nation", believing they had sold out their country and its population for the sake of English gold. To put the union flag, or colloquially known as the "Butcher's Rag" (named after the "Butcher" Cumberland as a result of the battle of Culloden) on such a prominent well-known event as a Burns Supper is an insult to Burns, and an insult to all those who gather together every year to celebrate his life and works. Scotland has its own flag, called the Saltire. We won't use the union flag, certainly not to celebrate Robert Burns, or indeed anything else Scottish.

This is a disgrace, burns was classed as an anti-unionist and gets degraded like this, get it fixed

Considering there are so many Americans proud of their SCOTTISH heritage, attaching a union jack instead of a saltire is appalling. How about you attach the UJ to some things proudly American? Just because the English had rule once upon a time..... No, didn't think so.......

In addition, Scotland (not the UK) were responsible for inventing inflatable tyre for cars, steam ships, television etc! We need to be recognised as a nation in it's own right

Using The Union Jack would not have been approved by Robert Burns himself.

Why do we need the 'Union Jack' to celebrate Burns.

I believe that the flag of Scotland should be used because Robert burns is a Scottish poet. To put it another way would the English people like to have the Saltire used as a logo for William Shakespeare?

I am an English born, Scottish living, British person and for the life of me cannot understand why we dont have the flag of St., Andrew as the symbol for Burns night. A great swathe of British people can't understand Burns, so why on earth try to claim him as your own?
