GHS, class of 2015. Mascots, like lions, bears, panthers, etc, are both caricatures and meant to instill fear. As a predominantly white town, it is unconscionable that we continue to create a caricature of the people whose stolen land we reside upon. This mascot is nothing but racist and if Guilford continues to claim to care about unity we must change this mascot.

I'm a current freshman at GHS and I don't want to feel embarrassed by my school mascot when I go into other communities in the area. I don't even like to wear ghs clothes or tell people I go there because I get embarrassed, which no student should have to deal with. I wish current students had the tools to understand the pain this mascot causes and learn from it.

The mascot is disrespectful and racist. It does not respect the Native Americans. The time to change is now.

It is long past time that the Guilford High School mascot be changed. It is demeaning for a race of people to be used as a mascot. There are many other options, including one that has completely been worked up to allow easy transition from currently used logos: go Guilford green.com.
It is essential that the mascot be changed now, particularly in the current light of racial turmoil in the country. Guilford needs to look at itself, its lack of diversity, and its attitude toward non white races. Converting the mascot is a small but necessary first step in this journey.

I raised 3 children in Guilford, and the use of a stereotype as a mascot is disgraceful. Ironically, I attended a high school that also used 'Indians' as the mascot. They had the good sense to change it. THIRTY YEARS AGO.

I was a guilford high school athlete for 4 years and the students and many citizens have been pushing for this as long I lived in the town, yet the town has repeatedly refused. Please finally listen!

Class of 2018, track and 3 year varsity soccer player. 2013 State Champions. This is something that should have been changed long ago. Our sports achievement and legacy should not be tied to a racist mascot, but to the scholastic and athletic achievements of the students and town of Guilford.

GHS Class of 2010, tennis team for all four years.
We should respect that the National Congress of American Indians finds the use of Native Americans as mascots as problematic, and we should change our mascot.
For those arguing that we should honor our history, we should find other ways to best reflect Guilford's Native Americans, in ways that can only be interpreted as unanimously positive celebrations.
The fact that this is a consistently brought-up, controversial topic in our town already points to how inherently problematic our mascot is.

2011, track and 4 year varsity soccer player and captain. I am now aware of our ignorance in high school and embarrassed by the days we "dressed up" as Indians for school pride. This needs to change.
