At Swansboro High School a dress code is implemented that is not only too strict but also over sexualizes the female body. Young women are told to cover up no matter if the temperature is 50 degrees or 90. The dress code does not allow students to show their shoulders or thighs but this dress code is much stricter on female students than males. The dress code is just another way for society to teach girls to cover up instead of teaching young men self-control is that really what our school system should be teaching our generation? The dress code has become so intense that it is almost impossible for girls to shop for clothes that will not have them sent home because they are not "appropriate". The argument that girls showing skin is distracting to male students is invalid due to the fact that Croatan a school known for their high academic standards is also a school with a very lenient dress code; perhaps that is because students are not pulled out of class and sent home because their shoulder is showing. A more lenient dress code is needed and desired by the student body.
I understand the dress code however one inch above the knee? Its hard for girls to find dresses that are that long and dont make you look like a sack of potatoes, and shorts are really hard to find!! American eagle sales shorts that do cover everything and on me they go halfway down my thigh i think we should be allowed to wear shorts like that.
