Regulating women's bodies is the wrong approach. If the boys are being distracted, teach them to redirect, focus and learn, don't teach the girls that their comfort, participation and value are secondary to the "distracted" boys in the class. Also, pay the boys some respect, they are not mindless animals with no self control. The current body-shaming dress code contributes to rape culture and is inappropriate.

This sort of 19th century prudishness does not serve any legitimate purpose has no place in the 21st. That the district has not reined in the principals engaging in this is just shameful. I keep hoping the principals of the schools where this is not an issue can help enlighten their peers, but if not the parents of every girl in this district have an obligation to speak up and take whatever action is necessary to stop this from continuing.

Everybody needs to learn (that's the point of school, right?) that bodies belong to the person who inhabits them and they are not theirs to gawk at. Boys don't need to be protected from girls shoulders.

I went to washington middle school last year after transferring from madison middle school. Madison has almost no dress code, or at least it isnt that enforced. So it surprised me when I came to a school where girls cant even wear leggings for fear of being publicly humiliated by Ms. Jones. I tried to start somthing like this when I was there but it never really went anywhere. Im so happy students are taking some serious action. Keep up the great work guys, im definitely telling my friends at Garfield.

This great I always disliked dress codes. I'm still targeted as a male at my job and I'm 32. If I want to wear a tank top or sleeveless shirt it's not ok but it is for the women... I think not. We're all equals!

I cannot believe, SPS cuts teacher, consultant, and specialist positions, but they pay a person whose job solely just to make sure everyone is dressed "appropriately". They need to get their priority straight!
