All EU countries have 1 residence document that allows their residents to live AND cross their countries’ border — but not Ireland! Why?!

It should be removed, and agreed it has too much of a risk.

I am in favour of abolishment of re-entry visa. I feel its tremendously stressful for a non eu student or researcher needing to depart immediately for fieldwork or conferences. besides, many a times wrong dates are assigned on re entry visas which further complicates the situation. There is no provision of appeal or rectification once re-entry visa dates are wrongly assigned. Moreover, ambiguity in granting single or multiple re-entry visa remains. I had applied for precise dates for re-entry and was assigned a wrong set of date. moreover, many a times when applied single entry multiple is granted and also application for multiple entry single entry granted. despite, the separate higher fee for multiple. once discripancy arises , the candidate has no choice but to re-apply again. This process really affects the work and research. Besides, the re-entry visa is an additional burden and cost borne by the candidate as these wont be re-imbursed by the university (visa cost not borne to keep parity between eu and non eu). if we see german visa they refund the visa cost of non eu researchers. But, no such provision is applicable in Ireland.

Re- entry is only a way of making money by the Department of Justice, not only it causes delay to get your passport back on time pripr to travel but also just a waste of money. Causes stress and has no use whatsoever. It should be completed removed. Once residence is awarded there's no need for an entry visa.

The re-entry visa is essentially duplicating efforts with IRP -- If an individual has an IRP, they are entitled to live in the state, but still require a separate document to enter the state. The work that goes into managing both could be placed towards more important things than double-stamping what's already been stamped

I don't need a visa any more, but I do think the reentry visa + the GNIB card + the stamp do not make sense

Agree, take two month to wait for your GNIB card. And another 6 weeks for you re-entry visa to come back. And in 9 month time you have to start this new nightmare again. This doesn't make any sense. I strongly recommend to abolish this re-entry system.

Also please take into account this fact that the total time we cannot leave Ireland due to this visa system is more than 2 months, which prevents many business and research related activities. Considering the fact that many countries such as the Schengen area need the visa to be valid for at least 3 months after the itinerary, and add 2 months for the appointment for visa application in such countries, we cannot enter these countries for 6 months each year, mainly because of such 1-year visa extension system.

Reentry visa is an extra financial burden and restriction and complications for people who would definitely be travelling. No other country in Europe impose such a discriminatory policy on people who are financially disadvantaged.

It's waste of efforts and time. If you really want us to pay extra money for reentry you may as well do it while we renew the visa itself

It is a daunting process to apply for visa and reentry for both the applicant and the government. Best to combine both and ease the process and overheads
